Spring thrives at Longwood

As welcome to winter-weary eyes as the sight of the first robin is the annual indoor Easter display at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square. A visual delight, the spectacular floral display can be seen from until Friday, April 13 in the Main Conservatory.

More than 1,000 Easter lilies trumpet the arrival of spring and fill every corner of the conservatory with their signature fragrance and stately white flowers. Accenting the colorful profusion of lilies, hydrangeas, delphiniums and daisies this year are thousands of orchids of varying shades and kinds throughout the conservatory. It’s all part of Longwood’s new Orchid Extravaganza.

Longwood pays tribute to this diva of the plant world with stunning displays and exhibits focusing on the revered and mysterious world of orchids. Included is an awesome orchid "curtain" in the Exhibition Hall. Visitors also can venture into the tropics and see species of orchids thriving in their natural environment.

The Orchid Extravaganza continues through Mother’s Day, May 13.

There’s springtime beauty outdoors as well. Visitors will feast their eyes on acres of budding gardens full of daffodils, tulips, magnolias, azaleas and flowering cherries. Also on view are millions of hardly little bulbs, such as amethysts, aquamarines and lapis lazuli. Sparkling in the grass, they were liberally scattered by Longwood’s gem-loving gardeners.

Adding to Longwood’s celebration of spring are a variety of daily programs, including gardening demonstrations and children’s activities, plus an Easter weekend of special events.

This Saturday, visitors of all ages can have Breakfast with the Easter Bunny in the Terrace Restaurant. Seatings at 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. will be followed by an Easter Egg Hunt. The popular event always sells out, so early reservations are suggested.

At 1 p.m. Saturday in the Ballroom, the Serafin String Quartet from Wilmington, Del., will entertain. The foursome performs traditional masterworks for strings and intersperses their program with less-familiar works from the 18th century to the present.

Garden Tram Tours are Saturday at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

From 1 to 3 p.m. Easter Sunday in the Music Room, there will be live piano music by Philadelphia’s own Rollin Wilber. Visitors also can enjoy an elegant Easter Sunday Brunch in Longwood’s beautiful Ballroom, with seatings from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

Sunday Springtime Tours are 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

For Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and Easter Brunch prices or reservations, call (610) 388-1000, ext. 100.

IF YOU GO: Longwood Gardens, the world’s premier horticultural showplace, is on Baltimore Pike near Kennett Square. It’s open every day 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Easter Sunday until 8 p.m. Admission is $14 adults ($10 on Tuesdays); $6 ages 16-20; $2 ages 6-15; free under age 6.
