We've all been there: You're sitting in a restaurant, staring at the menu and not finding exactly what you're craving. Some places might not accommodate special requests, but Maritsa's Cuisine is rewarding them.
The hometown restaurant is holding a contest for the entire length of 2007 called Customer Creations. Guests can fill out a form describing their original sandwich and enter it for the chance to win a gift card and for their sandwich to be featured on the menu for one month.
Co-owner Tom Kaliamouris said this idea came from customers who make special requests on a daily basis.
"I accommodate whatever the customer asks for as long as the ingredients are on the menu, and some of the sandwiches are pretty good and creative," Kaliamouris said.
"I thought it would be fun and exciting to have a contest and see what kinds of things they can come up with."
When creating their sandwich, guests must draw from items already listed on Maritsa's menu. Kalialouris noted that he does not have sourdough bread for example, so if an entry listed that as an ingredient, he might substitute rye bread instead.
Each month, Maritsa's will judge the entries on the following criteria: creativity, flavor and originality. There will be one winner a month and he or she will receive a $25 gift card to the restaurant and have their sandwich displayed on the feature board and available for other guests to order.
The Progress will also run an interview and photo with each month's winning sandwich and its creator. Kaliamouris said he would also feature the winner on maritsascuisine.com
"Good business depends on keeping the customers happy and satisfied," Kaliamouris said. "I hope this spurs people to come in and try us out."
Kaliamouris said there is no limit to the number of sandwiches a person can create and enter.
"If you don't win in January, your sandwich will automatically be re-entered and could win in an upcoming month," Kaliamouris said.
"We wanted to do something fresh for 2007 and so far we have about a dozen entries. This is going to be tough."
