Clifford B. Levine, an attorney for the Democratic Party, said after the second day of the recount wrapped up that he is confident Democrat Barbara McIlvaine Smith's lead over Republican Shannon Royer remains steady, and he believes that her lead has stretched to 26 votes over Royer. He added that her lead over Royer will be more concrete after this morning's ruling on the remaining challenged ballots.
"It appears we have confirmed Barbara McIlvaine Smith will be the elected representative," he said. "It appears there will be 102 Democrats in power to elect a speaker for the House."
Ronald L. Hicks Jr., an attorney for the Republican Party, said after Wednesday's conclusion that it is uncertain what the results are at this point.
"We have a hearing at 9:30. That's all I know," he said. "We don't know any results yet."
Hicks said he knew a hand recount could conclude in a timely fashion.
"Once everyone cooperates and it gets going, it goes by fast," Hicks said.
Levine was surprised that the recount was finished in just two days.
"I don't think anyone thought this was possible," he said.
