On the opening drive of the game, Avon started on their 22-yard line after John Rowley returned the opening kickoff from the goal line. Methodically marching down the field with Rowley, Mike D'Onofrio, and Conor Mack doing the running, while David Wyreck hooked up with Andy Roell on passes of 14 and 33 yards. D'Onofrio scored on a 1-yard run with 6:16 remaining in the quarter. The extra point pass failed, to make the score Avon 6 - Ellington 0. The remainder of the half was played with no score. While both teams moved the ball, neither could get into the end zone.
The 2nd half would begin the same as the 1st half ended, with neither team scoring in the 3rd quarter. That would change quite dramatically as the game moved into the final quarter. On a drive that began on the Ellington 38 on the final play of the 3rd quarter, Ellington would march down the field, with Sam Ziter on a 13-yard run and a 24-yard pass from Peter Vamvilis, along with 15 yard run from Derek Lussier, which put the ball on the 7-yard line. Deadrick Baker Jr. would race the final 7 yards for the score with 9:52 left in the game. The extra point kick was blocked to tie the game at 6-6. Both teams would then be forced to punt after a three and out. Then Avon, starting on their 37-yard line, would again put together a drive, with Wyreck completing a 33-yard touchdown pass to Andy Roell with 2:11 remaining in the game. Wyreck added the extra point kick to make the score Avon 13 - Ellington 6. Things were only beginning to heat up! Zak Blawie would kickoff to the Ellington 20 and Shane Hatheway would return the ball to the Ellington 35. On the first play from scrimmage, Peter Vamvilis would complete a 65-yard touchdown pass to Mike Riemer with1:53 remaining in the game. The extra point kick was again blocked, to make the score Avon 13 - Ellington 12. Jarod Marshall recovered the ensuing onside kick, and the Falcons began on their own 42-yard line. John Rowley would run for 3 yards and then 46 yards to the Ellington 9. Conor Mack would bolt into the end zone untouched with 1:20 remaining in the game. The extra point kick was wide, to make the score Avon 19 - Ellington 12. The final Ellington drive was cut short, when Avon intercepted at their 32-yard line. The Falcons ran out the clock to preserve the 19-12 victory.
Avon returns home for their final two games of the season. They host Gilbert on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1:30 p.m. and then complete the season on Saturday, Nov. 18, with a Senior Day game against Vinal Tech. Come support the team as they try to move to a 500 season.
