It's time to make a decision

Voters are ready throughout the region to cast their ballots on Nov. 7. The polls open for the General Election in Pennsylvania at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.


Running for the position of State Representatives for the 148th District will be incumbent State Rep. Michael Gerber (D-148), who will face Republican candidate Tom Gale. The 148th District is located in the Philadelphia suburbs and includes the Montgomery County municipalities of Conshohocken, Lower Merion, Narberth, Plymouth, Upper Dublin, Whitemarsh, and Whitpain.
Incumbent State Rep. Daylin Leach (D-149) will go up against Republican candidate Monica A. Treichel in the upcoming 2006 election for the position of State Representative for the 149th District. The 149th District includes all of Upper Merion, Bridgeport and West Conshohocken and Lower Merion areas.
Leach has four years experience working in the General Assembly. Treichel is a professor for the Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Candidates for U.S. Senator include incumbent Richard J. 'Rick' Santorum (R), who has served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and has been a member of the U.S. Senate from 1994 to present. Santorum was also Chairman of the United States Senate Republican Conference and serves on the Agricultural, Banking, Finance, Aging and Rules Committees.
Santorum's challenger is Robert P. 'Bob' Casey Jr., who is running for the Democratic Party.
Casey has been the Pennsylvania State Treasurer for the past eight years and served as Auditor General for Pennsylvania.
Running for Governor for Pennsylvania will be incumbent Edward G. 'Ed' Rendell for the Democratic Party. Rendell was first elected as Governor for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2002 and was mayor of Philadelphia from 1992 to 1999. Rendell was also the district attorney for Philadelphia from 1978 to 1985 and a United States Army Veteran.
Running for Lieutenant Governor will be Catherine Baker Knoll. The Lieutenant Governor is elected jointly with the Governor in the general election, although candidates for the two offices are nominated separately in the primary. Knoll has served also as Pennsylvania State Treasurer from 1989 to 1997.
Rendell's challenger will be Lynn Swann who will represent the Republican Party.
Swann presently is the President of Swann Inc. and has been a member of HJ Heinz Board of Directors and Hershey Resort and Entertainment Corporation Board. Swann was also Chairman for the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Chairman of the Board Big Brothers Big Sisters from 1993 to 1995. Swann will run against incumbent Rendell with Jim Matthews, who is running for lieutenant governor.
Matthews is the president of Keegan Mortgage Corporation and is a U.S. Navy Veteran. Matthews also served on Montgomery Board of Commissioners.
Running for the United States House of Representatives for District 6, which includes all of East Norriton, Limerick, Lower Merion, Perkiomen, Skippack, Worcester, Collegeville, Narberth, Norristown, Pottstown, Trappe, Plymouth sections:1, 3-2, 4, Whitemarsh West sections 1 and 2 and part of Chester County, will be incumbent Jim Gerlach (R-6) who will face Democratic challenger Lois Murphy.
Murphy is an attorney at Heckscher, Teillon, Terrill and Sager, representing small business owners, nonprofit and families. Her past occupations include Civil Division Law Clerk for the U.S. Justice Department and a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals.
Gerlach (R-6) has been a U.S. Representative from 2003 to present and also served in the same position from 1991 to 1994. Gerlach served on the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1995 to 2002.
Running for the U.S. House of Representatives for District 7, which includes all of Lower Providence, Upper Merion, Upper Providence, West Norriton, Bridgeport, Conshohocken, Royersford, West Conshohocken and parts of Delaware and Chester Counties will be incumbent Congressman Curt Weldon (R-7). Democratic challenger Joe Sestak is running against Weldon.
Before representing residents in Congress, Weldon served as the mayor of Marcus Hook Borough and was on Delaware County Council.
Sestak served 31 years in the Navy, including in the Clinton White House as the Director for Defense Policy. Sestak also commanded 15,000 men and women in the George Washington Aircraft Carrier Battle Group during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
