Though it wasn't a fight between two district rivals, the battle between these two teams was still there as the Calallen Wildcats and the Gregory-Portland Wildcats faced off on a game that was tight until the fourth quarter.

Calallen prevailed for a come from behind victory against Gregory-Portland, 49-24 last Friday at Wildcat Stadium.

Trouble for Calallen began in the first quarter when on G-P's first possession, running back James Smith blazed through with an 82-yard touchdown run to give G-P the early lead.

Later un the first quarter at the G-P 17 yard line on fourth down, G-P's kick was blocked by Alan Ford to give Calallen a safety as the Calallen Wildcats put themselves on the board, 7-2 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, things got a little interesting for Calallen.

Receiver Sean Hoelscher was already having a great night with four receptions for 70 yards, but two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct got him thrown out for the rest of the game.

"My second [penalty] I didn't do anything, and a couple of the one's that the other player's got, it didn't look like they were doing anything to deserve that," Hoelscher said.

Jeramie Marek, who usually is the safety, took over as quarterback for a while, and ran 20 yards to the end zone to give Calallen the lead, and after a missed two-point conversion the Calallen Wildcats led 8-7.

Later in the second quarter, Sean's brother, Skyler, had to leave the game after suffering an injury to his right leg.

"I'm alright. I'm glad we won, but I think my knee might be messed up again," said Skyler, who also injured his knee in a game last year. "I hope to recover to come back sometime this season."

Calallen would extend its lead to seven after Kindred McClure ran for his first of three touchdowns to put them ahead 14-7 after a missed kick by Josh Rowden hit the goal post.

G-P's running game would play harder during their next possession as Cody Nance would breeze with an 80-yard touchdown run as they tied Calallen, 14-14, after the extra point attempt was good.

G-P would pull ahead at the end of the half, 17-14 after kicker Jonathan Velasco made a good on a 33-yard field goal attempt with four seconds left on the clock.

Gregory-Portland would come up hard in the opening of the second half as they drove for nine plays to score a touchdown as Derek Parker would make a 7-yard run in the end zone to give G-P a double digit lead, 24-14.

"Anytime, you are down by 10 points you got to have some concern," said Calallen head coach Phil Danaher.

Duke would find receiver Steven Vidaurri for a 42-yard touchdown pass that would put Calallen within three, 24-21, after the extra point attempt was good.

During Calallen's next possession, quarterback Ryan Duke would throw his third interception of the night to G-P's Travis Pettis.

G-P's next possession would be short lived, as Ford would recover a fumble for Calallen that would become the start of their turnaround.

The fourth quarter belonged to Calallen, as McClure would make the next two touchdowns to help Calallen regain the lead and take over with a score of 35-24.

Duke would find Viduarri, again, as he threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to give the Calallen Wildcats a 42-24 lead.

The final touchdown of the evening was scored by McClure, but it was not Kindred that found the end zone.

His brother Bryden scored after he ran back 54-yards following a Gregory-Portland fumble.

With the victory, Calallen finishes their non-district schedule with a perfect 5-0 record.

The Wildcats are off this week as they get ready for district play against the 4-1 Alice Coyotes on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 in Alice.

"First of all we're going to get well, and then we're going to get ready and try to come back and execute and play better than we did tonight," said Coach Danaher.

Last year the Wildcats dominated the Coyotes, 43-13.
