H-M-S girls tak "roller coaster ride" to 1-2 mark at Spirit Lake

09/14/2006
The roller coaster ride Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's volleyball team took Saturday proved more enjoyable at the end than the beginning. The Hawks dropped two pool matches before winning their last of the day. The win boosted the Hawks' overall mark to 1-4 on the season.

"It was a roller coaster ride," co-coach Jena Dykstra observed. "We started slow and timid against North Kossuth. I think we played our best match of the year against Spirit Lake and even though we got one against Ruthven-Ayrshire, it wasn't pretty."
The statistics bear out Dykstra's observation about the match with eighth-ranked North Kossuth, which the Hawks lost 21-15, 21-9. While the Hawks missed just two service chances in the match, they had just 13 attempts.
"We struggled with our service and we didn't attack well. When we did, North Kossuth defended it well," Dykstra said.
H-M-S picked up the pace against Spirit Lake, defending and receiving serves well in addition to running quick attacks. The coach said the games were closer than the 21-14, 21-15 scores indicated.
The Hawks came out flat in the third round of pool play, according to Dykstra, but posted a 2-0 win over Ruthven-Ayrshire. H-M-S trailed in the first game but battled back for the 23-21 win in the opener then took the second game 21-18.
On the day, the Hawks converted 76 of 89 service chances with 14 aces. Camy Duis paced the team putting in play 20 of 22 chances with four aces. Anna Jacobs was 16 of 18 with four aces; Whitney Waechter 10 of 15 with three aces; Jenny Otto nine of 10 with one ace; and Kylah Otto eight of nine with one ace.
At the net, Waechter put down 15 of 19 attacks with five kills; K. Otto 12 of 14 with five kills; Jacobs seven of seven with one kill; Karissa Rozeboom six of seven with two kills; and Emily Hegstad four of five with one kill. K. Otto was credited with a dozen assists and Jacobs with eight.
      J. Otto posted five digs while Hegstad charted four blocks. Rozeboom and K. Otto each had three.
