JACK LAUGHERY-71 Jack Laughery, 71, Rocky Mount, NC, son of Gerald and Mildred (Ansberry) Laughery, was born and raised in Guthrie Center, IA. He died August 20, 2006 in Jackson, Wyoming. Cause of death was pneumonia, following a long battle with cancer. Jack graduated from Guthrie Center High School. He received his B.A. in Business from the University of Iowa in 1957 and joined Connecticut General Life Insurance. Following two years service in the U.S. Army he returned to Connecticut General. In 1962, Jack joined Sandy's, a fast food company headquartered in Kewanee, IL, as a manager in Davenport, IA. He rose through the ranks and in 1971 was named president and chief executive officer. A year later, he negotiated a merger between Sandy's and Hardee's Food Systems. He located at that time to Rocky Mount, NC to assume the title of executive vice president of Hardee's. In 1973, he became president and COO. He also served as CEO starting in 1975 and in 1980 he was elected chairman of the board. He retired as CEO in 1990, but continued an affiliation with the company until 1994. Jack was involved in other food service ventures, served on several corporate boards and received many industry and civic awards. He was active in the Republican Party at the local, state and national levels. In 1983 the University of Iowa named him Outstanding Alumnus. Survivors include his wife, the former Helen Herboth of Kirksville, MO; four daughters, Brenda Wienke, Kelly Laughery, Christine Laughery and Sarah McAuley; six granddaughters and one grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a step sister, Judith Griffiths. Funeral services were August 24, 2006 at Lakeside Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, NC.
