The summer of 2006 may best be remembered for an amazing bit of home-style chemistry that swept the Internet and millions of people around the world by storm -- or by geyser. The explosive and surprising effect of dropping Mentos candies into diet soda has inspired thousands of online amateur videos: by a recent count, more than 1,800 have been posted on youtube.com, over 1,000 on MySpace.com, and more than 500 on Google.com.

The online audience has been receptive to the show, with the videos attracting well over 5 million visitors in all.

Arguably one of the most popular "Mentos Geyser" videos has been an extraordinary "Bellagio fountain" created by two men from Maine that was recently featured in newspapers and on "the Late Show with David Letterman" and the "Today" show.

Delighted by the offbeat fun of the craze, Perfetti Van Melle, the maker of Mentos, is looking for the next great Mentos geyser video talent. Those who think they have what it takes to be the next great Mentos geyser videographer can log on to the Mentos site and upload their original Mentos geyser videos.

The contest runs now through Sept. 30 with the grand-prize winner to receive 1,000 free song downloads and a year’s supply of Mentos, along with the fame of being the next great geyser talent.

Winners of the first and second place videos will also receive free song downloads, and every entrant will receive Mentos gear to reward them for their creative efforts.

"We’ve seen the ‘Mentos Geyser’ craze bubble up every few years," said Pete Healy, vice president of marketing at Perfetti Van Melle USA, "but this time around people can share it through online videos ... We’re looking forward to a bunch of, well, explosively fine videos with this contest."

For more information or to find out how to submit a geyser video, check www.mentosgeysers.com on the Web.
