Postal worker back on the beat
By: Eric Quade 03/30/2006
A Barron postal worker who drove his mail truck while drunk last summer came back to his mail route as of March 23, but he'll be covering his route on foot for months to come.

Barron Postmistress Rhonda Olson said James A. Brown, 50, of Barron came back to work last Thursday. He will have to walk his city route because he lost his drivers license as part of his OWI conviction.

Brown was convicted in January on an OWI charge, his second, and sentenced to 40 days in jail. His license was also revoked for 18 months, but the revocation credited the six months Brown was on administrative suspension prior to conviction. His driving privileges are scheduled to be reinstated next January.

Brown had been a Barron postal employee for 26 years at the time of the incident.

The State Patrol had picked up Brown last July after city police initially responded to an emergency call about a mail truck that had struck two houses and one parked vehicle on W. LaSalle Avenue.

Witnesses told police that the driver fell out of the truck, then got back inside. Another caller said the mail truck was traveling on lawns and sidewalks.

A Barron officer located the mail truck heading east on W. LaSalle Avenue and recognized the driver as Brown.

Brown eventually stopped the mail truck on S. Fourth Street, got out of the truck and went into Skippy's bar. Brown came out of the bar seconds later, and the officer approached him.

The Barron officer reported the odor of intoxicating beverages on Brown's breath, and saw dirt on Brown's face, shirt and shorts. While talking to Brown, the officer also noticed that Brown's speech was slurred.

Brown has one prior charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and one charge of a driver having an open intoxicant in a vehicle. Both charges were filed on November 25, 2003, in Sawyer County. Brown was fined and his license revoked for seven months on January 13, 2004.
