The Maine was floated several years later, when it was taken out to deeper waters and then purposefully sunk once again, in order to stop traffic problems with the large vessels that came in and out of Cuba's major harbor day in and day out.
The Battleship Texas will be hosting a memorial for the Battleship Maine on Feb. 11 and 12 to honor the Maine and servicemen who have fought or are fighting for their country.
"This is the sixth year we've (hosted the memorial)," said John Ferguson, the volunteer service coordinator for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The Battleship Texas hosts the event as a living history exhibit. Actors will come dressed in Spanish-America War era clothes (as well as from other important eras in history) so that guests can get a feel for what it was like to live in a time of war over a hundred years ago.
"It will give anyone who comes out a greater appreciation of military history;" said Ferguson. "What they ate, what their uniforms looked and felt like, the kind of utensils they used; it will be a really (enriching) experience for everyone."
Patrons can also look forward to a weapons demonstration, which will include the firing of guns from different war eras.
Admission to the event will cost $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and will be free of charge for children and military personnel in uniform.
