Staff Report

The victims of Hurricane Katrina have not been forgotten by New Jersey residents.

In Princeton, a benefit concert, "Peace and Joy," with Broadway star Ciaran Sheehan is set for 8 p.m. Dec. 17 at St. Paul Church, 214 Nassau St.

Sheehan, a Dublin native and a graduate of Notre Dame High School, who starred in Broadway’s "Phantom of the Opera" following his Carnegie Hall debut, will sing Christmas, Broadway and Irish songs. Appearing with him will be Broadway soprano and star Gay Willis, Irish harpist-singer Aideen O’Donnell, and pianist Eily O’Grady Patterson.

Concert tickets at $20-$15 can be purchased in advance at the parish office 609-924-1743, or at the door. The pre-concert buffet dinner will cost $20.

Concert proceeds will benefit Catholic Relief Charities Hurricane Katrina Aid.

Displaced children from the Gulf region now living in New Jersey will be among 110 boys and girls from the Hightstown area atannual holiday party hosted on Dec. 5 by Hightstown High School’s Red Cross Club in the school cafeteria

On Dec. 11, Katrina survivors now residing in Mercer County will be honored guests and beneficiaries of a Christmas concertat Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton.

Presented by Shiloh Baptist Church’s SBC Liturgy & Worship Ministries, the "Love, Peace & Joy After the Storm" concert is expected to take in generous free-will contributions, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Katrina survivors.

"We are excited about the prospect of helping our brothers and sisters displaced by Hurricane Katrina," said Rev. Darrell L. Armstrong, pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Last month, another Trenton benefit sponsored by ART HELPS sold original art from Trenton-area artists for $1,000 and earmarked $600 for donation to the Salvation Army’s Katrina relief mission.

A catalog of unsold art is available at Cafe Ole, 126 S. Warren St., Trenton. Art can still be purchased until Dec. 31, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the Salvation Army.

Gifts are also being collected for shipment to the hurricane-ravaged Gulf region.

Nottingham Volunteer Fire Co. in conjunction with the WaWa Corp. is collecting toys for children in Waveland, Miss., which was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina and lost its school.

New, unwrapped toys for ages 4-11 (pre-k to grade 6) will be collected at the firehouse at 200 Mercer St., Hamilton Square, through Dec. 10. WaWa representatives leave on Dec. 12 with the toys for Mississippi.

The Nottingham VFC is also donating toys. For questions, call the firehouse at 609-890-9834.

Courthouse Quilters Guild of Hunterdon County is collecting old sewing machines in good repair, plus fabric and sewing supplies, to be shipped to quilters in Mississippi who lost everything to Hurricane Katrina.

Cash would also be appreciated to pay for shipping costs.

Drop off items at Kindered Quilts Shop, 21 E. Main St., Clinton, or call Joanne Linehan at 610-982-5503.
