FARMINGTON - After three straight losses, Farmington head coach Jeff Bemis made a decision. No more taking it easy in practice. The Indians spent each and every day in full pads hitting and hitting each other hard.

It paid off in the second half of Friday night’s Nutmeg Football League contest in the rain.

Farmington limited Vinal Tech/Coginchaug to just two first downs in the second half and outscored the Hawks by 28 points to earn a 34-8 victory.

"We showed improvement in the middle half of the game but we got outplayed in the second half," Vinal Tech/Coginchaug head coach Bob McNamara said. "You can’t give them short fields. And we couldn’t sustain our offense.

"Farmington beat us. Give them the credit," he said. "But, we’re better now than we were three weeks ago."

Vinal Tech’s lone scoring drive was impressive.

Sophomore Kevin Doherty completed a 51-yard pass to Nick Amarante to the Farmington 32-yard line early in the first quarter. Two plays later, Doherty hit a wide-open Eric Francis for a 27-yard gain to the two-yard line.

Emanuel Allen scored on a two-yard run and the Doherty completed a conversion pass to Amarante in the back of the end zone for an 8-3 lead.

Farmington led 9-8 at halftime thanks to a 10 yard run from Orlando Ortiz in the second quarter. But in the second half, the Indians didn’t allow the Hawks much room to operate.

A 22-yard kickoff return from Lionel Meda gave Farmington good position on the Hawks 48-yard line to begin the second half.

The Indians (1-3) marched down the field, capping off a nine-play drive with a 10-yard TD pass from Steve Harrington to R.J. Simeone.

The extra point was good for a 16-8 lead.

The Hawks lost three yards on its next possession and punted. Farmington took over on the Hawks 46. Running back Mike Peltier made a tremendous block to spring Ortiz for a 36-yard run to the Hawk 4-yard line.

On the next play, Ortiz (18-119) rambled in for the score and a 22-8 lead.

Ozzie Hill led the Hawks with 53 yards on 14 carries. Doherty completed 3-of-9 passes for 81 yards, all in the first half.
