Supervisors laud police coverage

SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — Five months in, and all’s well.

The Ransom Township supervisors told South Abington Board of Supervisors at its meeting Monday night that the police protection the South Abington Police Department has provided since April has been a success.

“I am pleased to say that from the moment we first met everything went smoothly,” said Ransom Township Board of Supervisors Chairman Joseph Esposito.

Mr. Esposito read three letters from Ransom residents praising the coverage, encouraging more coverage.

South Abington police patrol Ransom for 24 hours per week, said Police Chief Robert Gerrity. When the department is not patrolling, the township is covered by state police. Ransom does not have its own force.

South Abington charges Ransom an hourly rate, Chief Gerrity said. The yearly total cannot exceed $50,000. The department provides similar services to two other departments. Since February, South Abington has patrolled Newton Township for 10 hours per week and responded to emergencies when Newton’s lone officer was off-duty. Newton pays up to $30,000 annually.

The department, which operates with 10 full-time and nine part-time officers, also has provided 24-hour-a-day coverage to Clarks Green Borough for about 20 years for between $90,000 and $95,000 annually.
