Stymied early on the ground, the Terriers took to the air to beat Avon, 39-0 in a Nutmeg Football League contest on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Rocky Hill QB Doug Elliot completed 13-of-20 passes for a school-record 249 yards and three touchdowns.
In the second quarter, Elliot threw touchdown passes of 75 and 63 yards, respectively, on back-to-back
possessions. "We took advantage of the opportunities we had," Elliot said. "We saw their cornerbacks playing off and we knew our wide receivers could beat them."
Rocky Hill improves to 2-0 for the first time in the programs six-year history and hasnt allowed a point yet this season, outscoring its first two opponents by a combined score of 61-0. The 39-point margin of victory is the second largest in the teams history.
"They gave us problems running the ball but Doug had a good day throwing the ball," Rocky Hill coach Dave Coyne said. "Defensively, we did a good job shutting them down. It was a great day."
The Terriers forced two Avon fumbles and intercepted a pass. They didnt allow Avon a first down until there was about five minutes left in the third quarter. Elliot threw three passes to receiver Sean Burgwardt on the opening drive including a 22-yard completion down the right sideline on Rocky Hills first offensive play of the game. Mark Fritz capped off the opening drive for the Terriers with a 2-yard touchdown run. Chris Tyler added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
But on its next three possessions, the Terriers couldnt establish the running game, punting twice and
turning the ball over on a fumble. A 17-yard completion from Elliot to Abate and a 7-yard
completion to Burgwardt helped stretch Avons defense as the Terriers marched 57 yards on a 10-play drive, scoring on a 9-yard run by Abate for a 13-0 lead. On its next possession, Elliot found Burgwardt wide open down the left sideline for a 73-yard touchdown pass. The Terriers made it 26-0 when Elliot found Abate wide open over the middle for a 63-yard touchdown pass.
"They were all over the line to stop the run," Coyne said of Avon. "That left (the secondary) in man-to-man and our receivers are pretty fast."
The Terriers marched 76 yards on 11 plays on its opening drive of the third quarter to take a 33-0 lead
on a 8-yard touchdown pass from Elliot to Mark Fritz. On his first carry of the game, Dan Carducci scored on a 35-yard run for a 39-0 lead.
Burgwardt ended up with a career-high eight receptions for 137 yards. While Elliot broke the old single-game mark for passing set by Eric Fritz in 2001 against East Lyme (225 yards), he fell one completion shy of the school record held by Eric Fritz (14 vs. NorthwestCatholic in 2002).
"This is uncharted territory for us," Coyne said of the 2-0 start.
