The City of Atlanta, as well as Fulton and DeKalb counties are among local governments aiding evacuees of Hurricane Katrina.
At the request of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, the City of Atlanta Department of Housing, along with the Atlanta Housing Authority and the Atlanta Development Authority have identified approximately 800 affordable housing units for city residents and Hurricane Katrina individuals and families.
The list of available units will be distributed at the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency Job Fairs, which are held every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the AWDA offices at 818 Pollard Blvd., S. W., near Turner Field.
"Atlanta reaches out its arms and heart across the many miles to tell these individuals and families that have been affected that we are here to help and assist in any way that we can," Franklin said.

The housing list is also available on the city's website, at www.atlantaga.gov.

Individuals with questions may contact the city's Bureau of Housing Hotline at 404-330-6995.

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners recently launched a countywide donation drive to benefit Hurricane Katrina survivors.

Donations can be dropped off at any of 92 Fulton County facilities, including senior centers, libraries, health centers and fire stations.

Needed items include toiletries, baby care items, new underwear and socks for adults and children, and clean clothes.

"This is an opportunity for Fulton County residents to do what they can do to help," Fulton County District 6 Commissioner Nancy A. Boxill said.

All items will be delivered to the Salvation Army for processing and distribution.

"This is an extremely caring, compassionate community," Fulton County District 5 Commissioner Emma I. Darnell said. "We want to give Fulton County residents an opportunity to donate to benefit Hurricane Katrina survivors."
