Wildcats defeat Edinburg, headed for district

Wildcat Bryan Farris heads for the endzone after catching a pass from quarterback Ryan Duke against the Waco Lions.
Brahmas, having missed playoffs last year, look to make post-season run with win over Calallen

The Kingsville Brahmas have had little success against the Calallen Wildcats over the years.
After missing the playoffs last season by one game, the Brahmas know that a win over Calallen would be an ideal start to district play.
Despite beginning the season 2-0, the Brahmas dropped their final non-district game to the King Mustangs, 41-7.
The Brahma defense, which allowed 330 total yards against the Mustangs, 234 of which came through the air, is anchored by lineman Lucas Patterson.
Patterson has verbally committed to Texas A&M University.
Calallen head coach Phil Danaher said the Brahmas are a much better team than the score indicates. He feels confident that Kingsville could have been looking ahead to the upcoming showdown with the Wildcats.
"I told the kids not to be fooled by Kingsville's loss," Danaher said. "I think they spent more time thinking about Calallen than they did King. Kingsville has tremendous size on the line and great speed at the skill positions.
"This is a big game for them. They know that beating Calallen would put them ahead in the race for the playoffs. I am expecting a real battle."
Calallen (3-0) completed its non-district schedule with a 32-14 victory over the Edinburg Bobcats.
The Wildcats scored twice in the first quarter, putting the Bobcats in an uncomfortable situation early in the game.
Ryan Duke connected with senior Bryan Farris on a 22-yard touchdown pass for the first score of the game. Trey Slusher kicked the extra point and the Wildcats led 7-0.
Sean Hoelscher had blocked a Bobcat punt on the previous play and returned it for the touchdown, but a penalty nullified the score.
Kindred McClure, who was the leading rusher with 100 yards on 21 carries, scored on a 20 yard run to close out the quarter.
After pinning the Bobcats deep within their own territory, a fumbled snap was recovered by Hoelscher in the end zone for another quick Wildcat score.
On its next possession, Edinburg took advantage of several Wildcat penalties and drove the ball down the field for its first score of the game.
Jesse Galvan capped the drive with a 1-yard run for the touchdown.
Duke connected with Hoelscher from 4-yards to give Calallen a 26-7 lead at the half.
The Wildcats struggled offensively on their first possession of the third quarter. But, one big play put the Bobcats right back in the game.
Quarterback Jesus Gonzalez connected with Bobby Trevino, who eluded several Wildcat defenders and scored from 80-yards.
With the fourth quarter yet to be played, Calallen's lead was cut to 26-14.
Defensively, the 'Cats tightened up and held the Bobcats to only 19 yards rushing on 27 attempts.
Calallen finally put the game out of reach on a 3-yard run by McClure. Offensively the Wildcats rolled up 330 total yards. Duke completed 8 of 11 passing attempts for 53 yards. Sophomore Jeramie Marek, who split time with Duke at quarterback, completed 7 of 11 passing attempts for 43 yards.
"We did not play very well Friday night," Danaher said. "We weren't as sharp and made some mental mistakes that haven't been typical of this team. But, I told the kids that a good football team will find a way to win despite the mistakes and that's exactly what they did.
"They gave all they had the week before against Waco, so we weren't all that surprised by the slight let down. I know our kids will regroup this week and come out prepared for Kingsville."
Kingsville will host Calallen Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Javelina Stadium.
The game has been moved to Thursday night as a precaution due to hurricane Rita.
