On-duty Barron postman arrested for drunk driving
By:Bob Groshong 08/01/2005
A Barron postal employee has been placed on "emergency placement" after he was arrested for allegedly being drunk while driving.

James A. Brown, 49, was taken into custody by the Wisconsin State Patrol around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 19.

According to the report from the Barron Police Department, a 911 call was received at 4:17 p.m. The caller said a mail truck had struck two houses and one parked vehicle on W. LaSalle Ave.

Witnesses told police that the driver fell out of the truck, then got back inside. Another caller said the mail truck was traveling on lawns and sidewalks.

A Barron officer located the mail truck heading east on W. LaSalle Ave. and recognized the driver as James Brown. The officer turned around and followed the truck, which was now on E. LaSalle Ave.

The truck stopped in the lane of traffic on S. Fourth St., and Brown got out of the truck and went into Skippy's bar. Brown came out of the bar seconds later, and the officer approached him.

Allegedly, the officer could smell the odor of intoxicating beverages on Brown's breath. The officer also saw dirt on Brown's face, shirt and shorts. While talking to Brown, she noticed that his speech was slurred.

The Barron officer called the Barron County Sheriff's Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol for assistance. The State Patrol arrested Brown for operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant.

Brown has one prior charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and one charge of a driver having an open intoxicant in a vehicle. Both charges were filed on November 25, 2003, in Sawyer County. Brown was fined and his license revoked for seven months on January 13, 2004.

Brown is a city mail carrier who has been with the Barron Post Office for 26 years. Because of four years in the military, he has 30 years of service toward retirement.

Julie Cole, Acting Officer in Charge at the Barron Post Office, said Brown is on "emergency placement" pending and investigation of the allegations.

Unbelievable! He put so many people at risk! The Post Office will be held responsible for the damage caused to those houses and vehicle that he crashed into while driving intoxicated! Thank God he did not injure anyone! This guy obviously has a serious problem with alcohol. Get him into a treatment program!
