Officials broke ground Monday on a $1.82 million water project that will serve more than 350 people in the North Fork section of Wise County outside Pound.
About 30 people attended the afternoon event, during which several elected officials and community leaders spoke.

The project, which will involve laying nearly 40,000 feet of water line, is slated for completion in January 2006. The water lines will serve 145 households, 89 of which are low- to moderate income.

Led by Maxim Engineering, and managed by the Lenowisco Planning District Commission, the project is being completed by contractor Little Henry's Excavating & Paving Inc.

Funding for the project came from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, Virginia Department of Health, Wise County Public Service Authority, Lenowisco and state Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy.

Among those who spoke at the ceremony were Ron Flanary, executive director of the Lenowisco Planning District Commission; Kathy Roberson, chairman of the Wise County PSA; Sen. Phillip Puckett; Del. Clarence "Bud" Phillips; and Fred Luntsford and Ronnie Shortt, both Wise County supervisors.
