"They did a great job creating turnovers," Plainville coach Mike Archangelo said. "We spent a lot of time this week working on our secondary and getting our linebackers out. Every week were learning new stuff, and this week we worked on the secondary. We had Avon scouted pretty well."
The interceptions gave Plainville an insurmountable lead. It was a fumble, however, that set the tone for the afternoon. Avon fumbled on the games first play from scrimmage, and Plainville wasted little time taking advantage. Cam Vincelette threw a 19-yard pass to Shawn Thibeault to set up Kevin Czelleczs one-yard score to make it 7-0 with 7:32 left in the quarter. The Devils went 35 yards on nine plays on the drive.
Avon (1-5) managed three plays on its next drive before punting to Plainville. This time, it was the Devils who had a one-play drive, but with much better results. T.C. Scott (10 carries, 123 yards) broke a 77-yard run over the left side to give Plainville a 14-0 advantage with 5:20 to go in the first quarter.
The Falcons had the ball for the rest of the first quarter, but fell 14 points further behind without Plainville having to run a play.
Benson picked off a Thomas Hannifan pass and ran it back 27 yards with 4:07 left to extend the margin to 21-0. Four plays later it was Lees turn. Lee snared a pass over the middle of the field and went 52 yards the other way for a 28-0 Plainville lead with 2:43 left in the first quarter.
Hannifan got the Falcons passing game going on the Falcons next drive, and Avon got on the board with a seven-yard reception by Brad Seaman that closed the gap to 28-6 early in the second quarter. The next 10 minutes were quiet compared to the games start, but Barbagallo woke Plainvilles cheering section up again with a 62-yard interception return to make it 35-6 with 1:55 left in the half.
The ground game worked well for Plainville to open the second half, as Plainville finished things off with a 59-yard drive capped by Scotts touchdown run from 10 yards out. While the gifted sophomore had another huge day for Plainville, Archangelo credited a revamped offensive line for much of the teams success.
"We went with a whole new look," Archangelo said. "They did a nice job. We were just shaking things up."
Corey Zapatka (center) Aaron Weinhoffer (guard) and Kevin Carroccia were lauded by Archangelo for their performance in new roles on the line.
