V/C’s Inglis runs past SPGT

MIDDLETOWN -- Antonio Inglis is one pretty good football player.

The star running back for Vinal/Cognichaug had another enormous night as he smashed his own school rushing record with 278 yards in 22 carries to lead the Hawks to their second consecutive win, a 41-24 victory over winless St. Paul/Goodwin Tech at Palmer Field Friday night.

"There’s not much more that can be said about him that I haven’t said already," said V/C coach Bob McNamara after the Nutmeg League game. "He’s just a very good football player who loves to play the game. It’s hard to believe that someone his size can run so hard between the tackles.

"But his offensive line is giving him room. Once they starting believing in his ability, they have played great."

Inglis score his first touchdown on a 51-yard run immediately after St. Paul/Goodwin Tech had taken an 8-7 lead on a 79-yard run by Kenny Byrd at 2:26 of the first quarter. Inglis’ TD came just 12 seconds later.

St. Paul jumped ahead on a two-yard run by Jamel Greenlee at 5:32 of the second quarter, but Inglis answered right back with a 91-yard run at 4:45. The Hawks and Inglis never looked back.

Quarterback Todd Manjuck hit Inglis with a 25-yard pass with just five seconds remaining in the first half to give the Hawks a 29-16 halftime lead. Inglis scored his fourth touchdown of night on a one-yard run with 1:43 left in the third, a run that capped a drive in which Inglis carried the ball eight times in a row for 54 yards.

"We moved the ball well on offense," said St. Paul coach Ben Lee. "But we broke down on defense. Our execution on defense wasn’t there and we certainly couldn’t stop Inglis."

Byrd was clearly the best player on the field for the Falcons. Byrd rushed for 132 yards in 22 carries and was 6-for-16 passing for 73 more yards.

"Kenny Byrd is an outstanding football player," said McNamara. "And I thought St. Paul played their guts out tonight."

V/C had 437 yards offense, with 362 of its yards coming on the ground. St. Paul had 312 yards, 150 on the ground and 162 in the air.

"I thought Ozzie Hill and Jovan Cofield had their best nights running the ball," said McNamara. The two combined for 81 yards, significant in a rushing offense that has a featured back like Inglis.

V/C got on the board first on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Manjuck to Cofield with 2:42 left in the first quarter. The score seesawed until Inglis put the Hawks ahead to stay with his 91-yard run.

The Hawks got their final score on a 15-yard run by Cofield with 10:46 left in the game. St. Paul got a touchdown with 43 seconds to play on a three-yard run by Greenlee, a TD set up by a 37-yard run by Byrd.

"We go to Manchester to take on East Catholic next week and we know that will be tough," said McNamara. "But I’m happy with how we’re playing. The kids are playing with enthusiasm and confidence and that makes all the difference."
