WASHINGTON - For the up-and-coming varsity girls' soccer program at Shepaug, last Tuesday's game with Nonnewaug, which ended in a 1-1, felt like a win. The Chiefs could not have had such a good feeling. Nonnewaug was a preseason favorite to challenge for one of the top spots in the Berkshire League. The Chiefs did bounce back later in the week with a come-from-behind win over Gilbert, 4-2.
Shepaug's record is 2-2-2, Nonnewaug's 4-1-2.
The Spartans were within minutes of scoring the upset win over the Chiefs when Anna Baldwin scored off an assist from sister Sarah with only 1:05 left in regulation.
The Spartans was playing without their normal goalie; Katherine Pascal left the game with an injury with 10 minutes to go in the game. Jenna Temple stepped in the role and made two saves.
Shepaug's goal was scored by Julie Mangino in the 63rd minute of the game, unassisted.
The two teams had played through the first half and were midway through the second half before anyone scored. Neither team could score in overtime.
Nonnewaug had the edge in shots, 11-8, and a big advantage in corners, 7-0. Lauren Troia made five saves for the Chiefs.
In the Gilbert game, Nonnewaug again found themselves losing, this time 2-1 at the half. The Yellowjackets score 14 minutes into the contest but Nonnewaug's Ashley Rego answered back off an assist from Anna Baldwin at the 19th minute mark.
In the 27th minute Gilbert went ahead on their second goal.
Rachel Chasse quickly tied the game at 2-2 with her goal for the Chiefs only one minute into the second half. Baldwin scored the go-ahead goal eight minutes later off an assist from Chasse.
Rego added an insurance tally with under ten minutes to play off an assist from Baldwin.
Nonnewaug coach Bruce Neville noted the following players for their defensive efforts -- Julie Hamor, Kim Zavodjancik, Jacklyn Schlup, and Sarah Baldwin.
Christy Oullette and Lauren Troia split the goal-keeping duties with Troia making five saves. Gilbert's Becky LaChance made 10 saves.
