"This will be my third show. I must have done something right before since they asked me to come back," said Shinohara. "Being an artist, a showing in New York is always prestigious. It is just an honor to be asked."
Originally from Japan, Shinohara came to the U.S. in 1990 and first stayed in Boston working as a freelancer. In 1992 he did a lecture on East Asian Studies and someone from Wesleyan noticed his work.
"They asked me would I like to do a show at the university. I did the exhibit and at the show they asked me would I like to teach," said Shinohara.
Shinohara says he enjoys the diversity the most at Wesleyan.
"I have students from philosophy and all sorts of other subjects. They are not all just art students," said Shinohara. "The mix of students just brings a different energy to the class."
After nine years, Shinohara has enjoyed his time at the university and could not see himself anywhere else.
"Ill stay as long as they want me to be here," said Shinohara.
The show will open on Sept. 8 and will run until Oct. 9. The DFN Gallery is located 176 Franklin St. in New York.
