JANVRIN, GEOPFERT COMPETE IN DECATHLON
|
Panora native Kip Janvrin and Travis Geopfert of rural Linden have qualified for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials and will be competing in the decathlon July 16 and 17 at Sacramento, CA. Janvrin, the son of Ken and Karen Janvrin of Panora, is head track coach for men and women at Central Missouri State University in Warrens-burg. Geopfert is an assistant track and field coach at the University of Northern Iowa. He is the son of Gary Geopfert, Linden. In 2000, Janvrin became the oldest U.S. Olympian in history when he competed at the Sidney, Australia games. He was bronze medalist at the Goodwill Games in Russia in 1994. He has won 14 Drake Relays titles. In 2002, he won and set the world record for the double decathlon (20 events in two days) in Finland. He has been nationally ranked longer than any previous American (13x over 15 years) and he has been remarkably durable, failing to finish only 3 of 89 career decathlons. His 70 scores over 7,000 points is, by far, a world record as are his 38 wins. Geopfert graduated in 2002 from UNI where he was Missouri Valley Conference champion. He won the 2004 Drake Relays title, defeating Janvrin with whom he coached at Central Missouri in 2002-03. After opening the 2004 campaign with the win at Drake he has since set personal records twice in qualifying decathlon events. He has won seven times in 22 career meets.
