Even before Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 opened in theaters last Friday, the White House and its right-wing allies sought to smear both the film and Moore personally. Last month, White House communications director Dan Bartlett said the movie "was so outrageously false it's not even worth comment," even though he had not yet seen the film.

Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter discovered that "big-time conservative donors" are funding a slew of anti-Moore activities. Following the White House's tactic of attacking critics' patriotism, the right-wing is also apparently bankrolling a movie called Michael Moore Hates America.
But despite conservatives' best efforts to discredit the film, the New York Times notes, "central assertions of fact in Fahrenheit 9/11 are supported by the public record." When the movie was aired at the Cannes Film Festival, it won top prize from a panel made up of mostly American and British judges.
Accurate: New Report Says
Saudi Flights Occurred on 9/13
Critics have accused Moore of wrongly claiming a group of Saudis were allowed to fly out of the United States on September 13, when much of American airspace was still closed.
In fact, the movie accurately reports that 142 Saudis, including 24 members of the bin Laden family, were allowed to leave after September 13 - a fact well documented by the 9/11 Commission.
Additionally, new reports prove that Saudi flights did occur on 9/13, despite three years of Bush administration denials. As the St. Petersburg Times reports, on September 13, "with most of the nation's air traffic still grounded, a small jet landed at Tampa International Airport, picked up three young Saudi men and left" for Lexington, KY. The Saudis "then took another flight out of the country."
Because the information is so new, it was not in the 9/11 Commission's preliminary report. Subsequently, however, the commission has asked the Tampa airport "for any information about 'a chartered flight with six people, including a Saudi prince, that flew from Tampa, Florida on or about Sept. 13, 2001.' "
Accurate: Bush was not Focused on Terrorism
In the movie, Moore charges that President Bush did not pay enough attention to pre-9/11 warnings that al Qaeda was about to attack. Instead of focusing on terrorism, charges the movie, the president spent 42 percent of his first eight months in office on vacation. That figure "came not from a conspiracy-hungry Web site but from a calculation by The Washington Post."
Read American Progress's report "Truth & Consequences: The Bush Administration and 9/11" for a comprehensive history of how the White House underfunded counter-terrorism and downgraded terrorism as a priority before 9/11. See American Progress's new "Complete Saudi Primer" - a guide to everything you always wanted to know about the Bush-Saudi connection but were afraid to ask.
Disney's Effort to Censor Michael Moore
At the direction of CEO Michael Eisner (who is a Bush campaign contributor), the Walt Disney Company prohibited its Miramax division from distributing Fahrenheit 9/11. The company enjoys a cozy relationship with President Bush's brother, Jeb.
As governor of Florida, Jeb Bush serves as a trustee for the state employees' pension fund. That fund owns approximately 7.3 million shares of Disney stock.
Eisner told reporters he was refusing to distribute the film because Disney is "such a nonpartisan company, do not look for us to take sides."
Right-Wing Efforts to Censor Michael Moore
The campaign to silence Moore was taken up by the right-wing group with the ironic name Move America Forward. The group is headed by right-winger Howard Kaloogian, who also spearheaded the partisan campaign to quash a miniseries about Ronald Reagan and led the partisan fight to recall California Gov. Gray Davis.
Kaloogian also "credits himself with helping elect President Bush because he was No. 4 of 25 elected officials who signed a letter asking him to run in January 1999." The group, without having seen the film, "launched a preemptive attack against" the movie "by requesting movie theaters across the country not to show the film."
David Bossie's Hypocrisy
The conservative front group "Citizens United," which is headed by Clinton attacker David Bossie, is trying to get the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to intervene and censor advertising for Fahrenheit 9/11. Just two years ago, however, it was Bossie who led the charge against FEC interventions.
On 6/12/02, The Hill newspaper reported him saying his group feels "FEC rules and regulations are abhorrent...they restrict the American people's ability to have an influence in politics."
Rated R For Reality
The Motion Picture Association of America saddled the movie with an R rating.
Tom Ortenberg, president of the company releasing the film, "argued that 15- and 16-year-olds, who might end up fighting in the war on terrorism," should be able to see the film, which shows the true cost of war - gravely wounded Iraqi citizens and U.S. troops.
Much of that cost has been hidden by the Bush administration, which has banned photos of flag-draped coffins coming home (even though the Bush campaign uses flag draped corpses at Ground Zero in its political commercials).
President Bush has also refused to attend funerals of the fallen in Iraq.                   Moore argues that the movie needs to be seen by the widest possible audience to give the public a glimpse of the reality of war. All told, between the start of war on March 19, 2003 and June 16, 2004, 952 coalition forces were killed, including 836 U.S. military. For more on the hidden cost of war, go online and read this summary (www.ips-dc.org/iraq/costsofwar/) by the Institute for Policy Studies.

it seems too many people are reading between the lines -too much here. the docu's is quite basic. watch... and take it for what it's worth. michael moore is just throwing out the information. grasp it, or forget-about-it. personally... i grasped most of it, and forgot-about-the-rest.

I have seen Fahrenheit 9/11. It was a good glimpse of what is going on. Although I do not think everything is correct I agree this opionion that if 1/3 is true Bush is an arse..
I don't like what American government is doing or has done. In world war they bombed German civilian targets and hundreds of thousands died. Women and children. And war was almoust won.
And in Tokyo over 100 000 died. And nuclear bombs..The government did knew how terrible damage nuclear weapon would do. And countless japanise civilian died in Hirosima and Nagasaki..It was a war crime..And Vietnam..
Please don't vote Bush for second run..Save your country! And be the Americans you were born to be!

I really don't understand why democrats can't get the full picture on terrorism. These terrorist will chop off all our heads and battle us in our own streets if we refuse to deal with them in the middle east where I feel the fight belongs. Are democrats so wrapped up in themselves that there blind to truth? Thanks Eric, Wa.

It is beautiful that people are putting forth constructive comments on such an important topic. I hope those who support Moore will take the time to question what he says as much as they would like the President's supporters to question Bush.

The Ithaca Times is the most biased news source I've encountered in a long time. Remember, idealogy is just an imaginary way of look at a real situation. Liberals and conservatives love to bash each other publicly, but how about some actual solutions to the problems facing this country? It saddens me how many ignorant people will get all their information about the world from idealogically tainted sources such as your paper. Why can't we just look at reality instead of spinning it into some idealogical crisis? Liberals call FOX news biased because it actually mentions conservative viewpoints in a serious tone of voice, and defend the completely leftist slant of practically all other media sources as merely being representative of "what most people agree with anyway;" therefore, who cares if its biased as long as "everyone" agrees with it. I've got news for all you college students in Ithaca and elsewhere who think everyone things like an uberliberal : less than 20% of Americans describe themselves as "liberal." And for the record, as a registered libertarian, the irritation of hearing libs and cons argue over pointless aspects of things that can't be changed but must be dealt with (read: war on terrorism) is roughly twice as sickening since I can't stand either.

I served in the Marine Core and consider myself to be a patriot.

I'm open minded enough to vote for whom ever I think is the best candidate be it republican, democrat, or independent.

I think this is a film that every American
(who cares about his/her country) should see.

If even one-third of the facts are truthful, then this President should be impeached.

I'm calling them FACTS...because although this is one persons view...the sources are all taken direct from a source.

The Saudi ambassador (Bandar-Bush) tells Larry King "Live" that the Bin Lauden family is flown out of the country.

Regardless of Clake taking the fall for it...9/11 is the largest attack on U.S. soil. Larger than Pearl Harbor!

If anyone wishes to believe that one person, without higher authority, made a decision to fly the Bin Lauden's out of the country (when most of the hijackers were Saudi...and Osama was already a wanted terrorist) then that's their own
believe/fantasy.

The Washington Post is the source for the vacation time of close to 60%.

Public records are the source of the many different oil companies and their Saudi-Bin Lauden investors/partners.

The current ruler of Afghanistan is a former Bush business partner (who happen to sign the agreement for that pipeline)
Can anyone say conflict of interest?

Most of the rebuilding contracts and servicing contracts going to Haliburton (the Vice President old company)
Can anyone say conflict of interest?

George Bush SR sits with Osama's brother at a recorded business meeting at the moment that the twin towers are attacked?

The Taliban in Texas? This wasn't even considered news in my north eastern city.

CIA and FBI Pre-9/11 reports of possible terrorism and known terrorist going to U.S. flight schools...completely disregarded. Facts from the 9/11 commission.

These examples could go on and on. Unfortunately there shouldn't be any examples. There shouldn't even be any hint of any examples that alleges incompetence, corruption and immoral business ties on that scale.

I do not doubt that Moore has an agenda and his own. His person slant in the film is evident. The fact remains that we ARE dealing with FACTS. Even if you do not believe that the FULL truth of these facts are not being brought to light...If even one-third of these facts bare ANY semblance to the truth, then this president should be impeached.

Remember this is the same country that seemed justified in trying to impeach a president for getting a Bl*w J*b.

Keep in mind that the so called Right-wing may have been successful if not for another brave patriot named Larry Flint. Flint offered cash to any person that could come forth with proof of any affairs with married conservatives that were screaming for impeachment. That's when the train to impeach lost all of it's steam. I believe Moore is also a patriot along the same lines.

I'm sorry, I just need to say that Bush in no way or form has helped the nation economically or socially. He has made a temporary, tiny, boom with these tax cuts that most affect only the top few percentages in income. He has also helped turn a 5-trillion dollar surplus helped by the clinton administration into a 5-trillion dollar deficit. We will be paying for these tax cuts, mass amounts of printed money, and other thoughtless actions that have temporarily helped the economy ever so slightly years down the road when bush is out of office. In addition, he has alienated the United States from the rest of the world. His ideas and decisions have put the country at an enormous loss: the words 'United States' rarely (if ever) bring up the same respect that they did during past administrations. He is not helping America, he's destroying it. In all honesty, I have not seen Fahrenheit yet, and I understand that Moore is very biased, (and that while there are many truths, a few parts of the film have been exaggerated), yet the fact is that we need Bush out of office.

I truly think that people should open their eyes and really see what is going on in America. Michael Moore is one person who has a voice bigger than the rest of us (probably because he has money). The Bush Administration led our country down a path of trickery and deceit. After 9-11, we were kept on edge thinking that we were going to get attacked at any moments notice. So far, no attack. I not saying that we won’t ever get attacked again, but unless we all take responsibility and be more aware of our surrounding, we could be the next statistic. We don’t have to worry that all terrorists are going to be from the Middle East, we have had our own American terrorist—ask Timothy McVeigh (Oh, I forgot, he’s dead). I applaud Michael Moore for revealing what is going on. If he left out a few things—oh well, I believe the Bush administration has left some information out of their activities in the White House as well. You should watch the movie—or maybe read the news, not just CNN, but NPR and BBC. You may be surprised to know that Michael Moore may just have it right!

I think that Michael Moore is doing the American people a great service by exposing the corruption and lies that is going on now. They had no problem going after Nixson, but Bush is sonething else. So much for US style freedom!
