According to Jim Negley, township manager, Bush will stop at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center on April 19 to speak to the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors.
"He is coming to talk to the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors, which always holds its annual conference here every year this week in April," Negley explained. "He's coming to address the supervisors from all over the state."
Keith Hite, executive director of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors, explained what goes on at the annual conference, which will run from this Sunday morning until Wednesday, April 21 at noon.
"It's an educational conference," Hite said. "We will have in excess of 4,700 township officials and guests there. There's 260 exhibitors that will be on hand to demonstrate to these officials their wares, programs and services in order to help these officials better serve their residents. We will run more than 80 seminars that range from transportation issues to fiscal management."
Hite said that, as of Tuesday afternoon, he had not received final confirmation that Bush will be speaking at the conference, but if he does, it will be quite a unique event.
"We've never had a sitting president [speak]," he said. "We've had George H.W. Bush visit us in the early '80s. Before that, Vice President Ford visited us. We're excited about it and we hope it happens."
Negley said police chief William Smith will be working with the supervisors on the exact details of Bush's visit, but little of that will likely be made public.
"Planning is in the preliminary stages," Holl said. "Various local, state and federal resources will be involved."
