MIDDLETOWN - Chris Potter, who served as interim men’s ice hockey and golf coach since being hired at Wesleyan in mid-October, has been named an adjunct faculty member and head men’s ice hockey coach along with taking the reigns on a full-time basis of the golf program, athletics director John Biddiscombe announced recently.

Potter led the 2003-2004 Cardinals hockey squad to a overall record of 9-10-4 and in the NESCAC were a game under .500 at 7-8-3. That tally was good enough for seventh place in the 10-team standings. As a member of the ECAC, Wesleyan played an 18-game league schedule that included single games against each of the NESCAC colleges.

This season, three Cardinals were named to the prestigious All-NESCAC team. Senior goaltender Jim Panczykowski posted the finest single-season goals-against average in team history at 2.93. He also had an incredible 91.9 save percentage, freshman Will Bennett led the team in scoring with 15 goals and 11 assists for a total of 26 and was also named NESCAC rookie of the year and Potter was chosen NESCAC coach of the year after leading the team to it’s best showing in 15 years.

Potter served as an assistant ice hockey coach and recruiting coordinator at Brown University from 1998-2003 before coming to Wesleyan. Potter filled the shoes of coach Buddy Powers, who left the school after only months on the job after replacing legendary coach Dave Snyder in May 2003.

Potter is a graduate of the University of Connecticut where he was a four-year letterman in ice hockey, an All-American as a senior and a two-time all-ECAC and all-New England selection. He began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater from 1996-1998.

He played for the Roanoke Express of the East Coach Hockey League, which is now an affiliate of the Chicago Black Hawks of the NHL.

Potter earned his master’s degree in Education from Connecticut in 2003.

"Chris came to Wesleyan with a reputation as one of the top Ivy League assistants," Biddiscombe said. "In only one season at Wesleyan he has established himself as that of an outstanding head coach."

The Wesleyan golf team, which plays half it’s schedule in the fall season and continues in the spring, is currently 7-60. The schedule tips off on Wed. April 14th at Worcester, Mass., Poly Tech and concludes two weeks later on April 28.
