Cowboys Kicking Hunger
| | | | |
HARLAN -- Dallas Cowboys Placekicker and Harlan native Billy Cundiff was in town last week, coordinating an effort to collect food for the needy, as part of his Cowboys Kicking Hunger food challenge.
Students at New Park and West Ridge Elementary Schools brought in food to be donated to West Central Development Corporation. The winning classes, one at New Park and one at West Ridge who tallied the most items in pounds, won a pizza party with Cundiff. Besides the pizza parties, Cundiff took time out to visit with all of the students in the two schools, sharing part of the lunch hour with one of the classes above. He said he was overwhelmed at the generosity of the students and their families. More than 2,300 pounds of food was donated to West Central through the food drive. "The kids really got excited," said Cundiff. "The numbers are 10 times higher than I ever would have thought we could raise." Cundiff said he thought the food drive would be a good idea "so the people in Western Iowa could benefit by re-stocking the food pantry that was depleted during the Thanksgiving and Christmas push." Cundiff provided all the students in both schools, as well as staff, with autographed photos of the 2003-04 Cowboys team. (Photo by Mike Oeffner)
