The City of Newark will soon rehabilitate Market Street from the Central through the East Ward, making the historic artery safer and more attractive for pedestrians.

The construction of a landscaped-thoroughfare on Market Street is planned to start in May, according to James D. Adams, the city's director of engineering. The projects will connect Market Street with Broad Street, McCarter Highway, and Raymond Boulevard in the Central Ward.
The beautification initiative also calls for a median to be built between Prospect and Madison streets in the East Ward, he said. The Market Street project calls for repairing existing sidewalks, curbs, and narrow crosswalks and installing new traffic lights.
Adams said the project would reduce traffic congestion and control vehicular diversions into the surrounding residential area. The landscape also will include trees, plants, and signage, a left lane south of Raymond Boulevard, decorative lighting and new street furniture.
Mayor Sharpe James said, "Market Street spans over 337 years, from when the Puritans first settled. It has seen horse carriages, electric trolley cars, center island and now a European-style boulevard appearance. We will make Market Street a safer and more attractive street and reinforce its status as one of Newark's main thoroughfares."
Plans for the reconstruction and improvement of the Market Street and Elizabeth Avenue corridors will be unveiled to city residents at two public meetings in City Hall, scheduled for Feb. 5 and 12, at 6 p.m. both nights. The meetings are free and open to the public.
Department of Engineering representatives will explain the plans for reconstruction, its timetables, its impact on the community, and address concern and comments from residents on the proposal.
The Market Street project will be discussed at the Feb. 5 meeting, while the Elizabeth Avenue plan will be the topic on Feb. 12.
"We are being pro-active and responsive in our efforts to make our city attractive and convenient,"said James. "The rebuilding of Market Street and Elizabeth Avenue will have tremendous impact on the lives of our residents and the economy of those streets. We are determined that our plans meet our resident's need and gain their support."
Michel J. Gelin the Department of Engineering's principal engineer on the project, will conduct the meetings. For more information, contact the department of Engineering at 973-733-8520.
