The ladies of the Jewish Congregation's Sisterhood have reached out and warmed both the hearts and the bodies of the little ones at Manatee Elementary School.

On Monday they presented more than 350 sweaters to Carmen Fontdevila, the home/school liaison for the federal migrant school program, and Principal Nichole Winman.

Her eyes alight and her face beaming with a huge smile, "I'm going to have a heart attack!" Fontdevila claimed when she caught sight of huge pile of boxes and bags of neatly folded sweaters.

"This is so wonderful," added Winman. "Our kids rarely get anything new."

"A few months ago, one phone call to Pennsylvania resulted in the arrival of 50 sweaters." said an enthusiastic Joanne Blau, publicity chair for the Sisterhood. "One call led to another, the word spread to Maine, New York, Hialeah FL; Major corporations such as K-Mart, JC Penney, Costco and the Children's Place gave a hand."

Both the Sisterhood and the school are thankful to those who helped warm the children. And not a moment too soon, with the arrival of chilly weather.

"During this week," said Fontdevila, "we are giving out a toy and a sweater to every kid we can."

The sweater idea was spearheaded by Joanne Blau and Carole Kendall, while other members of the Sisterhood lent their hands to support the project.
