Enfield’s Jubrey passes test at Palmer

MIDDLETOWN -- Pat Jubrey threw for 200 yards to lead Enfield to a 29-6 Nutmeg League win over Vinal/Cog-0inchaug at Palmer Field Friday night. Jubrey completed 13-of-19 passes.

"That was the best I’ve seen him," said V/C coach Bob McNamara. "He’s a very good player."

Enfield also played very well on defense, holding V/C to 117 total yards, 18 in the second half. V/C also gave up 124 yards on the ground besides Jubrey’s 200 yards. The Hawks stayed in the game for the first half, mainly on the strength of their own defense which throttled Enfield, especially on the ground. The halftime score was 7-0 in favor of the visitors, but the second half was another story.

"We did a good job of stopping them early and early penalties and mistakes hurt us, too," said McNamara. "Had we been able to score early, that might have changed things."

V/C threatened to score on its first possession. The Hawks got to the Enfield 17-yard line, but penalties and ultimately a fumble killed the drive. Enfield moved to the V/C one yard line in the first quarter, but the Hawks came up with a goal line stand to keep the first quarter scoreless.

Enfield got the game’s first score with 52 second left in the half on a one year sneak by Jubrey. But the Raiders scored quickly once the second half began.

On the first play from scrimmage, Jubrey hit Jeremy Kauffman on a 33-yard pass and on the next play, Jesse Marrow ran 27 yards for the score. Enfield scored again in the quarter on a tricky end around in which the end, Mike Aganoustou threw 14 yards on fourth down to Tony Campanelli for a touchdown.

On V/C’s next possession, a dreadful snap on a punt gave Enfield a first down on the 10-yard line and Marrow ran the required 10 yards on the first play for Enfield’s final TD with 20 seconds left in the quarter. For some reason Enfield went for the two point conversion and got it on Kauffman’s run.

V/C’s score came on a 73-yard punt return by Dave Francis with 3:10 remaining in the game.

"We got banged up tonight (Brenton Milardo, knee) and we’ve lost two players to discipline," said McNamara. "But that’s no excuse. Enfield is pretty big up front, they made some big plays in the second half and Jubrey just was right on the money tonight."

V/C’s Antonio Inglis led all rushers with 65 yards in 11 carries while Marrow had 55 yards in nine carries for Enfield (4-1). Chris Chase caught four passes for 105 yards for the winners.

V/C (2-3-1) plays in Rocky Hill Friday at 6:30.
