The Blue Devils had a chance to break a halftime tie early in the third quarter when Hungerford ran for a 79-yard touchdown, but the play was called back because of clipping on the offense. SP/GT took advantage of the error.
Quarterback Robert Swanke (11-18-1 192 yards) found Kevin ONeil open for a 35-yard TD to give the Falcons (1-3) a 20-14 lead with 11:46 left in the game. Again Plainville had a chance to score when Allen Niedzwiecki ran it in from 53 yards out, but a holding penalty took the ball back in Blue Devil territory, ending the potential threat.
"We made quite a few mistakes," Scott said. "It shouldnt have come down to that last minute touchdown."
The Falcons put pressure on Plainville. Swanke lofted a pass that was almost intercepted, but the ball landed in Juan Hernandez hands. Hernandez ran the rest of the way for 67 yards to give SP/GT the 26-14 advantage with 10:04 to go.
"The whole season our team has been a never die team," Mack said. "We never lay down for any team."
This game was no exception.
Plainville took the ball on its own 40 and took 10 plays to put the ball in the end zone to make it 26-20 with 5:07 left. SP/GT went three-and-out, and were forced to punt. With 3:10 on the clock and down by six, the Blue Devils came through. They went 55 yards on 10 plays but Hungerford ripped down a pass in the end zone to tie the game.
"Will Hungerford (27 carries, 132 yards) played an amazing game," Mack said. "Hes a big-time player, and hes really the keystone of this team. Everybody sees him keep going, and keep driving, and keep playing, it gives everybody else the same type of attitude.
"That whole game I feel like Im going to have a heart-attack," Mack said. "Its a great win for us."
