Early troubles continue for Farmington

FARMINGTON -- For over two quarters, the Farmington High football team had survived some penalties, a few dropped passes and even another blocked punt.

Three times in the first half, visiting Montville High drove inside the Farmington 11-yard line, but the host Indians didn’t yield a point and recovered a pair of fumbles to stop Montville.

The game was scoreless when Farmington lined up to punt late in the third quarter. But the inability to punt the ball away continued to haunt Farmington as Montville’s Tony Homsey partially blocked a punt and his teammate Scott Conn picked up the loose ball to scamper 55 yards for the touchdown.

A little over two minutes later, Isaias Sostre returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown asMontville scored 14 points in a span of 2:04 to break open a close game and beat Farmington, 22-0 in anon-league contest Friday night.

Farmington (1-2) forced five Montville turnovers, recovering four fumbles and picking off a pass. ButFarmington continually shot itself in the foot with penalties (10 for 69 yards).

"We were able to move the ball but we self destructed with penalties," Farmington head coach Jeff Bemis said. "Our defense is playing good football. But our offense can’t put it in the end zone. It’s a breakdown here and there."

Nick Bliss led the Indians with 72 yards on the ground but Farmington never really threatened to score. They never got past the Montville 46-yard line.

"This is the second week in a row that the defense has brought us back in a ballgame," Montville coach Walt Sherwin said. "Offensively, we were our own worse enemy."

Montville (2-0) blocked Farmington’s first punt of the game and took over on the FHS 30-yard line. Montville drove to the FHS 11 but coughed the ball up after a big hit from Bliss.

Late in the second quarter, Montville had first-and-goal from the Farmington 4. But Bliss stuffed Bryce Martin for no gain, Montville was penalized five yards for illegal motion and a bad pitch was recovered on the 25-yard line by Montville’s Anthony Rocket.

Farmington linebacker Sean Garvey actually recovered the fumble initially and took a few steps before losing the ball to Rocket, giving Montville another first down. Three plays later, Montville had first-and-goal on the Farmington 7 but fumbled the ball away two plays later.

Another blocked punt turned the game. Homsey tipped the ball and it rolled toward the sideline. A few Farmington players were near the ball but no one picked it up. It was just about to roll out of bounds but Conn scooped it up and took off down the sideline, breaking a tackle on his way to a touchdown.

It was the fourth blocked punt of the year against FHS and the third to be returned for a touchdown to give Montville a 7-0 lead.

"We’re not getting the ball back quick enough (to the punter). We’re not getting the [punt] away quick enough and the line isn’t picking up the overloads," Bemis said.

Farmington had two punts returned for touchdowns in its season-opening loss to Enfield, 22-13.

Sostre’s interception return made it 14-0. On the next series, Farmington’s starting QB Shamik Desai was knocked out of the game with a leg injury. He was taken to the hospital before the game was completed.

Montville closed out the scoring with a safety and a 30-yard TD pass to John Davis from backup QB Anthony Giansanti.

Jermaine Baskerville pulled in the longest pass play of the game with a 38-yard reception from Desai(5-14-1, 53 yards) in the second quarter.

Nick Frechette had a seven-yard sack for FHS and recovered a fumble while Mike Peltier, Baskerville and Mitch Alves also recovered fumbles for FHS. Martin Jones had a 22-yard interception return forFarmington.

It was the first meeting on the gridiron between the two schools.
