PHS Girls Defeat Westhill
By: Staff 09/17/2003
MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY - Pomperaug traveled to Stamford for the first game of the girls' soccer season. Playing Westhill in a non-league contest, the Panthers posted a 4-3 victory.

Lindsay Varlay put the home team in front by scoring early in the first half, but Panther Ann MacWilliams took a pass from Kaitlyn Cates and tied the score at 1-1.

Lexi Allen's unassisted goal gave Pomperaug its first lead, but just before the half, Varlay scored again and knotted the score.

Pomperaug went ahead 3-2 on a goal by Lisa Farina off an assist from Erica Kramer.

Again, Westhill answered when Wanda Velaj scored for the home side.

Allen won the game for Pomperaug when she scored an unassisted goal with five minutes left.

The winning goalkeeper, Andrea, Northrup, made 15 saves in the Panther nets. Katherine Begetis had 18 saves for Westhill.

The Panther girls moved to 2-0 for the young season when they posted an easy 5-0 win over Notre Dame of Fairfield last Friday.

Allen, a junior, led the Panthers with two goals and two assists. Allen has scored four goals in the first two games.

Also scoring for Pomperaug were Kaitlynn Cates, Melanie Fernandez and Jessica Karkut; Cates also added an assist.

Northrup recorded her first shutout in goal this season, as she turned aside six Notre Dame scoring attempts.
