Gary Guge, Logan, Harrison County Extension Education Director, joined 84 other inductees into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibit Building at the Iowa State Fair, Aug. 17. Inductees into the Hall of Fame received recognition for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. They or surviving family members were presented a plaque by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they were introduced on stage. Since 1963, the heart of Harrison County Extension has been Gary Guge. Since beginning his extension career as a 4-H youth staff member, Gary has been a tireless supporter and promoter of 4-H. Whether it is making the Harrison County Fair an exceptionally positive learning experience for all of the participants and parents or serving as adult sponsor or organizer for dozens of 4-H trips, camps and conferences, Gary makes sure that youth have countless opportunities to grow in 4-H. Gary, who is a master at pooling resources, arranged one such opportunity with a local ag company where 4-Hers of Harrison County were allowed to harvest beans and corn from a research plot that eventually provided major funding to build new restroom/shower facilities at the county fairgrounds along with providing for trip and camp scholarships. Gary Guge exemplifies the tradition of making 4-H a great place where adults make a difference in helping youth grow. Counties select inductees for their exceptional work in contributing to the lives of 4-H members and the overall 4-H program. Many inductees have served as club leaders, youth mentors, fair superintendents or fair board members, Extension council members, county youth council members, fair judges, financial supporters, chaperones, or Iowa State University (ISU) Extension staff members. The inductees have exemplified dedication, encouragement, commitment, sharing and guidance to Iowa's 4-Hers through the years. "This is a wonderful opportunity for the counties and state to recognize and celebrate 4-H volunteers and staff who have shown outstanding service and dedication to Iowa's 4-H program," said Chuck Morris, ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development interim director. Iowa 4-H initiated the Hall of Fame in 2002 to help commemorate the 4-H Centennial, inducting 100 people at last year's state fair.
