The SEPTA police sergeant who shot and killed another man on Miller Road in Perkiomen Township Wednesday night was allegedly being threatened by the shooting victim, according to a press release from the Montgomery County district attorney's office.

The unnamed SEPTA officer was on his way to pick up his daughter at soccer practice and about to turn onto Ott Road when his BMW was nearly struck by a gray Pontiac driven by Joseph McNair, according to the press release.

McNair allegedly "reversed his vehicle, and got out of his car and began threatening the Sergeant," according to the press release.

"The Sergeant explained that McNair lives next door to him and there has been an ongoing problem with McNair and several other neighbors," according to the press release.

According to police, McNair continued to threaten the sergeant and a verbal argument ensued.

"The Sergeant also said that McNair went back into his car, leaned in through the open driver's front door, and it appeared he was, '...going to get something,'" according to the press release.

When McNair made a motion to come back out of the car, "the Sergeant said that he pulled out his handgun from inside his waistband and shot at McNair," believing McNair was about to pull a gun on him.

State police and the district attorney are continuing to investigate the incident. For a full story, see Friday's Times Herald.
