      |  | Cyclones topple Heelan 21-14 on to the Dome, Mon., Nov. 16 play Carroll at 4:30 pm Using a bend-but-don't-break defense and strong ground game, Harlan Community (12-0) defeated Sioux City Bishop Heelan (10-2) in a battle of powerhouse schools, 21-14, in a Class 3-A playoff quarterfinal Friday night at Merrill Field.
Sophomore safety Luke Musich snared a corner endzone interception to seal the victory with 39 seconds left, giving the Cyclones the win and a trip to the UNI-Dome on Monday, November 16 in Cedar Falls. HCHS will face Carroll (12-0) at 4:30 pm.
The Crusaders moved the ball effectively for much of the game, but were thwarted by a tenacious Cyclones defense which forced the Sioux City squad to cough up three key fumbles, including one at the goal line as they were about to score.

| Christiansen retains mayor's spot HARLAN -- Incumbent mayor Gary Christiansen, having served 10 years as mayor and eight years before that as a member of the Harlan City Council won the mayoral election on Tuesday, November 3.
Final vote totals were: Christiansen - 268; local businessman David Tyrrel - 195 and college student Josh Gear - 85. Also elected for the City Council were Orv Roecker, Keith Kaufman and Aaron Anliker.

| Fire damages Defiance home DEFIANCE -- Fire caused extensive damage to this home in Defiance Monday night, Oct. 26.
The home, located at 100 4th St., the Janice Larrison residence, sustained substantial damage.
Defiance Fire Chief Alan Wilwerding said crews were called to the residence about 8:15 p.m. Monday evening. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from out of every corner of the house, he said. Full Story
