    The Oath of Office Ceremonies took place last Monday at Roger Ludlowe Middle School where Master of Cerremonies Ken Flatto addressed the group and Town Clerk Elizabeth Browne administered the 'Oath of Office' to the newly elected local board and commission officials.

    Flatto asks for zero increase
    First Selectman Ken Flatto said he would ask for a zero percent increase in the budgets for both the Town and the Board of Education for fiscal year 2010-2011, which begins next July 1.
    Speaking at a press conference in Town Hall on Monday afternoon, the First Selectman said he is reacting to what he heard the voters say on election day and he wanted to get his budget message out early.

    $1 million winner at local News Stop
    Robert Connelly has been going to News Stop on Stratfield Road for at least three years now, to buy various scratch-off lottery-type games. Friday a week ago, it paid off.
    Connelly paid $10 each for four or five scratch-off tickets. One was number 20 in a game called $70 Million Blockbuster. He took ticket number 20 home along with the others, scratched it off, and bingo!, er, Blockbuster!, he won a million dollars.

    Skateboard Park to open soon, weather permitting
    While waiting for town dignitaries to attend the ceremonial dedication of Fairfield's newest addition to its town park system, this reporter and his grandson, Conor Ford, an 11 year old skateboarding enthusiast, came across two teens and practiced boarders eager to witness history.
    Will Lederer and Mike Rich shared their enthusiasm for the new, nearly finished skate park [seen in the background] which, they along with other teen members of the Skate Park Committee, helped design.

    Disaster averted from tanker fire on I-95

    "If it had gone up in flames - if the container had been breached, we'd still be there now," said Fairfield Assistant Fire Chief Chris Tracy one day after firefighters managed to contain the fire on a tanker truck carrying a volatile chemical on I-95.
    The possibility of a disaster caused residents near Exit 19 to be evacuated and the Thruway to be shut down in both directions on Monday morning.

    Black Rock Congregational receives approval for church expansion
    Black Rock Congregational Church received approval from the Inland Wetlands Commission last Thursday night for a new 85,000 square foot church, two and a half times as large as the present 34,000 square foot church.
    "We are pleased with the approval and look forward to the next phase of the process, getting this through the TPZ," said Kenneth Brix, Executive Director of the church.
    Brix added, "The conditions as modified were completely acceptable."

    BOE honors retiring members, music program deemed outstanding
    On Tuesday night, the Board of Education said goodbye to three of its members and adopted some important resolutions after much discussion.
    It voted to appoint a hearing officer for expulsion or residency matters, it raised graduation requirements in history to 4 from 3½ credits, and it adopted the recommendations of the Long Range Facilities Plan for discussion purposes.
