Enforcement Effort
NEWTOWN - The Police Department will intensify efforts to enforce seat belt laws during the 2009 Click It or Ticket mobilization through November 29.

Police will participate with the Redding, Brookfield and Bethel Police Departments to use a round-the-clock regional seat belt enforcement unit.

A grant from the Department of Highway Safety will cover the overtime costs associated with this effort.

Police remind motorists of a new seat belt law for drivers under the age of 18 that requires everyone in a vehicle to be belted or face a fine of $120 for each unbelted person.

A pre-survey of 200 vehicles conducted on November 9 indicated a usage rate of 93 percent.

MIDDLEBURY - Police reported a motor vehicle accident at 8:41 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, at Middlebury Road.

A verbal warning was given to Ronald Arcovio, 51, of 286 Lakeside Blvd., Waterbury, for failing to give a proper signal for a left or a U turn. Dana Best, 46, of 32 Fenn Road, Northfield, was also involved in the accident.

Officer Ron Pruchnicki investigated.

MIDDLEBURY - According to police, a motor vehicle accident with no injuries was reported at 12:07 a.m. Saturday, November 7, at Middlebury Road.

A verbal warning was given to Eric Gableman, 19, 1351 Christian Rd., for failing to drive a reasonable distance apart from another vehicle. Ronald Greene, 62, of 75 Triangle Hill Blvd., was also involved in the accident.

NEWTOWN - Police said that a Toyota Corolla rear-ended a pickup truck on Berkshire Road at 8:30 a.m. on November 9. The pickup truck left the scene before police arrived. The owner should contact the Newtown Police Department.

NEWTOWN - Police reported that Daniel Mcilrath, 13 Sugar Loaf Rd., Sandy Hook, was traveling south on South Main Street at 4:57 p.m. on November 8.

An unidentified vehicle was existing from a driveway at 235 South Main St. and turned left into the southbound lane.

Police indicated that Mr. Mcilrath tried to avoid a collision but the unidentified vehicle continued straight through the intersection and struck the front driver side of Mr. Mcilrath's vehicle.

Police said that Mr. Mcilrath told police the unidentified vehicle continued to the parking lot of 232 South Main St. and drove behind a building.

He described the vehicle as an older model navy blue pickup truck with navy blue tool boxes and two rusted racks in the truck bed.

NEWTOWN - According to police, Peter LaMonte, 95 Toddy Hill Rd., was found sleep in a running Subaru Legacy at 4:45 a.m. November 7 at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Toddy Hill Road.

Officers determined Mr. LaMonte was operating under the influence of alcohol.

Police arrested him and issued a court date of November 24. Mr. LaMonte posted a $100 cash bond and was released.

NEWTOWN - Police reported that Robert Hutchinson, 153 Rockwell Rd., Bethel, was eastbound on Churchill Road at 2:37 a.m. on November 6. Mr. Hutchinson came to a stop on the eastbound shoulder of Church Hill Road and Walnut Tree Hill Road.

An officer stopped to investigate and charged Mr. Hutchinson with operating under suspension.

Police released him on a $100 bond with a court date of November 20.

NEWTOWN - Police said Robert Fairchild, 5 Inas Dr., Brookfield, was westbound on Churchill Road at 5:27 p.m. on November 6. James P. Gillies, III, 106 Seeley Rd., Trumbull, was eastbound on the same road, in the right turn only lane.

Traffic ahead had stopped and Mr. Fairchild turned left, passing through stopped traffic in the straight only lane, directly in front of Mr. Gillies.

No injuries were reported. Police charged Mr. Fairchild with failure to grant right of way.

NEWTOWN - According to police, they found Christian Gorley, 465 Whalley Ave., Unit E, New Haven, parked in the area of Lorraine Drive at 1:45 p.m. on November 6.

After investigation, police discovered Mr. Gorley was operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. Police charged him and later released him on a promise to appear in court on November 20.

NEWTOWN - Police said Zachary Fabian-Craig, 380 Old Waterbury Rd., Southbury, was eastbound on Church Hill Road at 4:40 p.m. on November 5. Jennifer Graham, 32 Old Farm Hill Rd., was westbound on the same road.

Police said that Mr. Fabian-Craig told police he was following a pickup truck that slowed for traffic. He passed the truck on the right to enter Interstate 84.

He said he saw Ms. Graham but was unable to avoid a collision and struck the passenger side of Ms. Graham's vehicle.

Newtown Ambulance provided treatment for Ms. Graham's passenger, who complained of pain in his left arm. No other injuries were reported and police charged Mr. Fabian-Craig with passing on the right.

NEWTOWN - Police reported that they arrested Joseph Bromley, 177 Colonial St., Oakville, for sixth degree larceny at the Big Y grocery store.

Police released him after he posted a cash bond of $100. He is due in court on November 19.

NEWTOWN - According to police, Vikki Carlson, 53 Copper Creek Circle, was traveling south on Hanover Road at 7:21 a.m. on November 4.

Police said that Ms. Carlson told them she was near the intersection of Tamarack Road when a deer ran out into the roadway and struck the front driver's side of her vehicle. There were no injuries reported.

NEWTOWN - Police said Richard H. Snee, 465 Middle Rd., Farmington, was traveling east on Berkshire Road at 6:25 p.m. on November 4.

A deer attempted to cross the road and Mr. Snee's vehicle struck the left side of the deer. It then ran off. There were no injuries reported.

NEWTOWN - According to police, they received a report stating the operator of a black Nissan had been involved in a physical altercation with his ex-girlfriend on November 1.

The report also stated a knife had been displayed and there was a young child in the vehicle with the operator. Officers stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Sugar Street and South Main Street.

After investigation, they charged Angelo DiCicco, 23 Sunny Brook Rd., Newington, with breach of peace, risk of injury to children, and criminal violation of a protective order.

Police released him on a $10,000 surety bond with a court date of November 2.

OXFORD - A Southbury driver was cited on November 6 following a two-vehicle accident on Route 67.

Police said Alan Tarini, 56, of 1531 Southford Rd., was traveling north when his car traveled over the center line and sideswiped a southbound vehicle operated by Angela R. Juliani, 49, of 41 Steeple View Lane, Woodbury.

Police said that Mr. Tarini, who did not stop his vehicle, was located shortly after the accident and charged with evading responsibility and failure to drive right.

Neither driver was injured. Resident Trooper Michael Dyki investigated.

OXFORD - Police are investigating the burglary of a residence on Coppermine Road on November 6. Jewelry and electronics were reported missing, apparently taken between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

OXFORD - Police arrested Patrick Christopher Kennedy, 40, of 77 Cook St., Prospect, on November 5 after receiving a report of a vehicle being off the road on Route 42.

On investigating, Resident Trooper Ryan Pfeiffer found a disabled vehicle with Mr. Kennedy inside. Mr. Kennedy was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive right.

He was scheduled o appear in Derby Superior Court on November 16.

OXFORD - A Seymour driver was cited on November 4 following a four-vehicle accident on Route 67.

Police said that Christine Mott, 27, of 59 Derby Ave., was traveling north when her vehicle struck the rear of another northbound vehicle that was stopped for traffic. That vehicle was operated by Carol Shortell, 65, of 4 Applegate Lane, Woodbury.

The impact caused Ms. Shortell's vehicle to strike a stopped vehicle operated by Carol DePalma, 63, of 204 Chip Shot Lane, and Ms. DePalma's car was pushed into a vehicle operated by Mark Adams, 35, of 17 Labordie Rd.

None of the drivers was injured and all were able to drive their vehicles from the scene, except for Ms. Mott. Ms. Mott was charged with following too close and not having insurance.

OXFORD - Police arrested David Michael Studley, 48, of 10 Old Country Rd., on November 3 after he turned himself in at Troop A.

A warrant had been issued for Mr. Studley's arrest, stemming from a motor vehicle accident on October 9, when he was cited for operating under the influence and failure to drive right. The accident occurred on Route 188 near Perkins Road.

Police indicated that Mr. Studley was released on a $500 non-surety bond and scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court on November 13.

Officer Louis Denaro made the arrest.

OXFORD - Police reported that someone punctured a tire on a town-owned vehicle that was parked on Quaker Farms Road and also left a note on the windshield that pertained to a political affiliation.

The incident occurred on November 2, the eve of the municipal election.

OXFORD - A local resident was cited recently following a two-vehicle accident on Oxford Road. Police said William Crowther, 83, of 12 Cedar Lane pulled onto Route 67 from the Riggs Street intersection and struck a northbound vehicle.

The northbound vehicle was operated by Michael L. Powell, 32, of 156 Bushnell Avenue, Oakville.

Neither driver was injured. Mr. Crowther received a written warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

Corporal James Burr investigated.

BETHLEHEM - According to police, James Golden, 55, of 292 Old Town Farm Rd., was arrested for failure to drive in the proper lane on a multilane highway and operating under the influence of alcohol, at 7:24 p.m. Sunday, November 8, on Magnolia Hill Road.

He was arrested after he was observed driving erratically. Mr. Golden was issued a Monday, November 16, court date.

Officer Cono D'Elia investigated.

SOUTHBURY - According to police reports, Jonathan Salamone, 18, 192 Little Fox Lane, was arrested on November 4 for violating a protective order which stems from an incident in early October.

He was released on $1,000 bond to appear in court on November 5.

SOUTHBURY - On November 4, Jennifer Robson, 33, 6 High Bridge Rd., Sandy Hook, was arrested at Waterbury Court on a warrant issued for a series of thefts between May 15 and September 7, 2009.

She is currently held in the State of Connecticut and was not released on bond. She was arraigned in court on November 5.

SOUTHBURY - According to police, on November 5, Kervin J. Staebler, 22, 41 Central Rd., Middlebury, was seen driving erratically on Route 172.

He was charged with DWI and failure to drive to the right, and was released on $500 bond with a court appearance scheduled for November 19.

SOUTHBURY - Police reported that Daniel Farina, 45, 114 Scout Rd., turned himself in at the Southbury Police Department after learning of a warrant to arrest him for criminal attempt at larceny, larceny 6th degree, and fraudulent use of an ATM machine.

The warrant was issued by the Waterbury Superior Court as the result of an investigation of an incident that occurred on May 13, 2009. He was released on $2000 bond, to appear in court on November 18.

SOUTHBURY - On November 8 at 1 a.m. a vehicle swerved across the center line and almost side swiped Officer Burns' patrol car on River Road.

The officer turned, stopped the vehicle and arrested James Riddle, 16, 5 Vining Rd., Newtown, for DWI and failure to drive to the right.

SOUTHBURY - On a routine patrol on November 8, Officer Renaldi observed a vehicle improperly pass another on Stongtown Road.

Investigation led to the arrest of Larry Hanson, 37, 639 Oxford Rd., Oxford, for operating a motor vehicle while under suspension and for improper passing.

SOUTHBURY - According to police, on November 8 Theodore Skowronski, 62, 122 Sleepy Hill Rd., was eastbound on Burr Road when he veered off the right side of the road, striking four wooden guardrails and then a tree.

No injuries were reported, and there were no witnesses. The weather was clear and the road was dry.

SOUTHBURY - On November 9, Officer Renaldi saw a vehicle traveling north on Strongtown Road, and stopped it for failure to display a front registration plate.

Investigation led to his arrest for misuse of plates, operating without insurance, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and failure to display a registration plate.

He was released on $500 bond, with a date in court on November 19.

NEWTOWN - Police reported that approximately 40 random headstones, stone planters and statues were damaged at the St. Rose Cemetery in Sandy Hook between late evening October 31 and early morning November 1.

Police took evidence from the scene and sent it to the State Forensic Lab for testing.

NEWTOWN - According to police, they are investigating several incidents of criminal mischief in the Philo Curtis Road and Bishop Circle area that occurred in the early morning of October 31.

They are also investigating several damaged mailboxes on Old Hawleyville Road, Alberts Hill Road and Adams Hill Lane, as well as a damaged Lexus parked in the driveway of 3 Pocono Rd.

NEWTOWN - Police said unknown person(s) spray painted graffiti on a privately-owned fence on the corner of Charter Ridge Road and Clapboard Ridge Road.

NEWTOWN - Police said they are investigating an evading motor vehicle accident that occurred in the parking lot of the Toro Restaurant on Church Hill Road between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.on October 31.

A black Lexus SUV was struck on the rear passenger side, leaving scrapes.

NEWTOWN - According to police, they responded to a one-vehicle accident on Berkshire Road at approximately midnight on October 30.

Officers arrested Christopher Paquin, 5 Nutmeg Ln., Sandy Hook, for operating under the influence and making a restricted turn without signaling. They released him on a $100 bond with a court date of November 17.

NEWTOWN - Police reported that Benjamin Spragg, 12 Arlyn Ridge Rd., was traveling through the intersection of Brushy Hill Road and Platts Hill Road when a deer ran into the side of his vehicle at 7:19 p.m. on October 30.

Police also reported a minor dent in the vehicle and there were no injuries.

NEWTOWN - According to police, person(s) unknown spray painted the letters "RLY" with a question mark under the "R" on several locations around the exterior of the Newtown Youth Academy.

NEWTOWN - Police said Lindell Hertberg, 61 Main St., was eastbound on Church Hill Road in the right turn only lane, approaching the Interstate 84 exit 10 on-ramp at 4:05 p.m. on October 29.

Police said that John Gogliettino, 129 Lake Pl. South, Danbury, was westbound on Church Hill Road. Mr. Gogliettino attempted to make a left turn into the driveway of 66 Church Hill Rd. as Mr. Hertberg passed by.

The front bumper of Mr. Hertberg's vehicle struck the front driver's side wheel of Mr. Gogliettino's vehicle.

Police charged Mr. Gogliettino with failure to grant right of way.

NEWTOWN - According to police, Matthew Solicito, 2881 Broadbridge Ave., Stratford, was southbound on Currituck Road at 7:22 a.m. on October 29.

Police said that Mr. Solicito was stopped at the intersection of Main Street and continued out into the southbound lane of Main Street without granting right of way to traffic not obligated to stop.

Police indicated that Jessica Oltmann, 59 Bear Hills Rd., began to stop for Mr. Solicito and struck the rear driver side of his vehicle. Police issued Mr. Solicito a verbal warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

NEWTOWN - Police said they are investigating an evading motor vehicle accident that happened in the area of 50 Berkshire Rd. at approximately 11 p.m. on October 28.

An unknown vehicle struck a stone wall and mailboxes off the eastbound shoulder of the road. The vehicle left the scene, traveling east. It is believed to be a pickup truck with heavy front-end damage.

NEWTOWN - Police said they investigated a domestic dispute at a residence on South Main Street at 10 p.m. on October 27. They arrested a juvenile offender and charged the youth with breach of peace and interfering with an emergency call.

They released the youth into the custody of a parent with a court date of November 2.

NEWTOWN - According to police, they responded to a physical domestic dispute on Ox Hill Road at 7:40 p.m. on October 27. They arrested a juvenile offender and charged the youth with disorderly conduct.

The youth is scheduled to appear in court on November 2.

NEWTOWN - Police reported that Jessica Harvath, 48 Cummings Rd., Apt 2, Brighton, Mass., was southbound on Berkshire Road at 6:10 p.m. on October 26. Ms. Harvath told police a deer ran in front of her and she was unable to avoid hitting it.

NEWTOWN - According to police, Todd Preszler, 14 Overlook Dr., was traveling south on South Main Street when he lost landscaping debris on the roadway at 8:18 p.m. on October 23.

The debris caused damage to the vehicle behind Mr. Preszler, driven by Jennifer Dimyan, 22 Merlins Ln. Mr. Preszler was issued a written warning for not securing the load.

MONROE - Police said Bethel police arrested Trista Vaughan, 54 Taylor Rd., Bethel, on November 3. There was an outstanding warrant stemming from her failure to appear in court to answer for earlier charges.

Police released her on a $500 bond with a court date of November 12.

MONROE - Police reported that Joshua Pires, 297 Cross Hill Rd., turned himself in on November 2. Police charged him with third degree stalking after an incident in October.

Police released him on a $10,000 cash bond with a court date of November 3.

MONROE - According to police, they stopped Maritza Arias, 306 Turkey Roost Rd., for talking on a cell phone while driving on Moose Hill Road at noon on November 2.

They charged her with operating a vehicle while using a cell phone, traveling fast, and possession of narcotics.

They released her on a $500 bond with a court date of November 10.

MONROE - Police reported that Christine Braun, 218 Fan Hill Rd., was observed placing items in her purse and exiting the Stop and Shop supermarket on Route 111 without paying for the items on November 2.

They charged her with sixth degree larceny and released her on a promise to appear in court on November 10.

MONROE - Police said the Stratford Police Department arrested Christopher Barocsi, 19 Dusty Ln., Newtown, for shoplifting in Stratford on November 1.

Police said there was an active warrant for Mr. Barocsi's arrest. They had previously charged him with fifth degree conspiracy to commit larceny.

Police transported Mr. Barocsi to court when he failed to make the $2,500 bond.

MONROE - Police reported that Richard M. Cardinale, 19 Wells Rd., was speeding in the area of Ridge Dale Road and Pepper Street at 1:35 a.m. on October 31. Police allege he was moving at 50 mph in a 25-mph zone.

They charged him with driving under the influence, unreasonable speed and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Police released him on a $500 surety bond with a court date of November 10.

MONROE - According to police, Viola Walberg, Whisconier Rd., Apt 25, Brookfield, was involved in a two-vehicle accident on Route 25 at 8:18 p.m. on October 31. Police charged Ms. Walberg with driving under the influence and following too close.

They released her on a $500 bond with a court date of November 10.

MONROE - Police said they are investigating a burglary that took place at TC's One Stop convenience store, 477 Monroe Tpke., at 3:20 a.m. on October 29.

Officers responded to a burglar alarm and found the front door shattered. The door was closed but unlocked.

MONROE - Police reported a hit and run accident on October 28. They described the vehicle that left the scene as a pickup truck heading toward Trumbull.

Monroe Police contacted Trumbull Police for assistance, who located and stopped a vehicle matching the description with the corresponding damage.

They said the driver admitted to fleeing the scene and they found five packages of a substance that later tested positive as heroin.

Police arrested the driver, Casey Prall, 32 Forest Ave., Danbury, for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of narcotics. They released him on a $5,000 bond with a court date of October 29.

They also arrested Mr. Prall's passenger, Kirstin Siniak, 17 Elgin Ave., Bethel, and charged her with failure to keep drugs in their original container and possession of narcotics. They released her on a $2000 bond with a court date of November 5.

MONROE - Police reported a burglary at the Donut Inn, 43 Route 111, on October 27.

An employee discovered that person(s) unknown entered through the back door and took a cash register and 30 cartons of cigarettes.
