ParrellaNEWTOWN - Alfred Theodore Parrella, 88, of Newtown, died peacefully Sunday, November 8, at home, surrounded by his family and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony. He was the husband of Ellen Parrella.
Mr. Parrella was born January 18, 1921, in New Haven, fifth child of Alfonso and Maria (Esposito) Parrella. He attended Hillhouse High School and spent four years on full scholarship at Yale, graduating in 1942 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander during World War II and Korea, until 1955, when he settled in Newtown. Most of his professional life was spent at the Farrel Company of Ansonia, where he invented, developed and received patents for more than a dozen new mechanisms for roll grinders used in the steel, paper and sugar industries.
He traveled all over the world and was a "Who's Who" in Roll Grinder Engineering.
Following his retirement, he joined the International Executive Service Corps and spent several months consulting in the Czech Republic and in Hungary after the Iron Curtain fell. He also spent several years in his retirement as a literacy volunteer.
A life-long opera lover, musician and singer, he was a member of the first Newtown Choral Society and a founder of the Newtown Madrigal Singers and the Newtown Friends of Music.
He was active in the Newtown Congregational Church, Rotary Club, Newtown Men's Literary and Social Club and the Newtown's Boys' Club.
Besides his wife, he leaves his step-children, George, Jim and Kaia Fahrenholz; his sister-in-law, Lucy Parrella; his nephews, John and David Parrella; his nieces, Patricia Parrella Allen, Pamela Parrella and Licia Parrella Britton; six great-nieces and nephews and three great-great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Louis Parrella, M.D., and Gioachino Parrella, M.D.; and his sisters, Lina and Ida.
A service of thanksgiving and celebration of his life will take place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 21, at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West St. Arrangements are by Honan Funeral Home.

NEWTOWN - Barbara E. Hanauer, 93, of Newtown, died Sunday, November 8, at Bethel Health Care Center. She was the widow of Boyd Hanauer.
Mrs. Hanauer was born September 10, 1916, in Crompton, R.I., daughter of the late James E. and Mary Frances Elizabeth (James) Dailey. She retired as an aide supervisor after more than 25 years at Fairfield Hills.
She was an accomplished seamstress who loved animals and enjoyed traveling and reading. She was a long-time resident of Newtown and a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church.
She leaves her brother, Gilbert Dailey and his wife, Betty, of Brooklyn, and her nieces and nephews, Susan Berube and her husband, Ron, and their daughter, Emily, of Newtown, Gary Frenette and his wife, Linda, of Woodbury and daughters, Sarah Oliver and Julianna; Aileen Saari and her husband, John, of Stonington and their son, Jack, Bonnie Mooney and her husband, Mike, Brian Dailey and Richard Davis, all of Brooklyn.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place November 11 at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by burial in St. Rose Cemetery, Sandy Hook. Arrangements were by Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main St. South, Southbury.

Uberti
SEYMOUR -Marilyn G. Uberti, 74, of Seymour, died with her children at her side, Wednesday, November 11, at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
Mrs. Uberti was born October 6, 1935, in Derby, daughter of the late Michael Ferla and Teresa Farrel, and was a resident of Ansonia, Woodbridge and Seymour throughout her lifetime. A graduate of Ansonia High School and St. Vincent's School of Nursing, she went on to a 31-year career as a school nurse in the Ansonia Public School System, where she was known for her kindness, caring and generosity.
She was a communicant of the Holy Rosary Church, a member of the Holy Rosary Women's Guild, and a member of the Red Hat Society.
She enjoyed reading, traveling, ballroom dancing and spending time with her grandchildren.
She leaves her children, James G. Uberti, M.D., and his wife, Anne, of Woodbury, and Resa Gilmore and her husband, Philip, of Montville, N.J.; her grandchildren, Elise and Nicholas Uberti and Mathew and Derek Gilmore; her longtime companion, Horace Marrone, two nieces and a nephew.
She was predeceased by her brother, Salvatore Ferla.
Funeral services took place November 14 at Holy Rosary Church, Ansonia. Entombment followed in Mt. St. Peter Garden Mausoleum, Derby. Arrangements were by Riverview Funeral Home, Shelton.

ANSONIA - Ann I. Rowe Rau, 76, of Ansonia, died Wednesday, November 11, at Birmingham Health Care in Derby.
Mrs. Rau was born April 3, 1933, in Derby, daughter of the late Thomas and Ruth (Murray) Kurek and her biological father, William Rowe. She was employed as an administrative assistant for the Bridgeport Public Schools for many years until her retirement.
She was a resident of Bridgeport for most of her life before moving to Ansonia seven years ago. She enjoyed playing cards and board games with her family.
She leaves two daughters, Doreen Sandberg and her husband, Michael, of Ansonia and Marie Laudicina of West Haven; a brother, William Rowe of Florida; five grandchildren, Keith Justo of Stratford, Jamie Justo of Bridgeport, Danielle Moore and Darcie Moore of Ansonia and Jeremy Justo of Seymour; three great-grandchildren, Adriana and Blessing Justo and Justin Rosa, and several nieces.
She was predeceased by a sister, Jane McDougall.
Funeral services took place November 13 in the chapel of Spinelli-Ricciuti Funeral Home, Ansonia. Burial was to be private.

Halloran
MIDDLEBURY - Joseph Robert Halloran, 74, of Middlebury, died Wednesday, November 11, at Waterbury Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Brenda (O'Connor) Halloran.
Mr. Halloran was born August 27, 1935, in Waterbury, son of the late Eugene and Marjorie (McGrath) Halloran. He was a graduate of Crosby High School, Southern Connecticut State University, and received his master's degree and sixth year certificate from the University of Bridgeport.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, serving in Korea with Company A, 17th Infantry Division, attaining the rank of sergeant. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
He was a guidance counselor at Kennedy High School from 1970 until 1994. Prior to that, he taught science and coached basketball at Bunker Hill Grammar School.
He later worked for Waterbury Adult Education and was currently employed as a child advocate for the state of Connecticut.
He was a member of St. John of the Cross Church, a member of Crestbrook Golf Club and an avid golfer.
Besides his wife, he leaves his daughter, Tracey Maton of Thomaston; his son, Brian J. Halloran of Waterbury; his brother, David E. Halloran and his wife, Grace, of Waterbury; his stepdaughter, Coleen O'Connor of Litchfield; two stepsons, Michael O'Connor of Woodbury and Steve O'Connor; two grandsons, Gavin and Brendan Maton; five granddaughters, Michaela Motta, Elizabeth Motta, Madeline O'Connor, Olivia O'Connor and Jillian O'Connor, and two nieces, Dana Lawlor and Lauren Halloran.
Funeral services took place November 16 at St. John of the Cross Church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Watertown, at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were by Murphy Funeral Home, Waterbury.

SOUTHBURY - Richard Unwin of Southbury died Thursday, November 12, at the Southbury Training School Health Center.
Mr. Unwin was born December 2, 1931, in Waterbury, son of the late Thomas and Nora (Fitzgerald) Unwin.
He leaves three sisters, Katherine Marotto and her husband, Robert, of Topsham, Maine, Ellen Celentano and her husband, Michael, of Schenectady, N.Y., and Mary Unwin of Waterbury; a sister-in-law, Antoinette Unwin, and 15 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Unwin.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated November 16 at Sacred Heart Church, followed by burial in Pine Hill Cemetery.

MIDDLEBURY - Richard E. Cote, 73, of Middlebury, died Friday, November 13, at his home. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Cote) Cote.
Mr. Cote was born August 28, 1936, in Hartford, son of the late Marcel E. and Doris (LaPierre) Cote.
He lived in Middlebury for 37 years. He was retired from the State of Connecticut, where he was a police officer at Fairfield Hills Hospital for many years.
He was a volunteer fireman and an EMT for the town of Middlebury for many years. He was a communicant of St. John of the Cross Church.
He leaves his son, Dick Cote and his wife, Anya, of Atlanta, Ga.; his daughter, Lt. Col. Eileen Loflin and her husband, John, of Abilene, Tex.; five grandchildren, Kelsey, Gage, Leah, Megan and Grace, and a nephew, Eric Cote.
Funeral services took place November 17 at St. John of the Cross Church.

OXFORD - Tatiana Novosilzov, 84, of Oxford, died Friday, November 13, at her home. She was the widow of Oleg Novosilzov.
Mrs. Novosilzov was born November 17, 1924, in Charkoff, Russia, daughter of the late Nikolai and Olga (Bulgakov) Oloviagina and granddaughter of the late Archpriest Gregory Bulgakov and Elizabeth Spassey.
She graduated from the Ville De Liege in Paris in 1948 and worked for many years as a textile designer with the Schumacker Company in Manhattan.
She leaves two step-daughters, Irina Novosilzov and Natalia Novosilzov, both of Spain.
Funeral services took place November 17 at Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, Southbury, with burial in Novo Diveyevo Cemetery, Nanuet, N.Y.

ST. PETERSBURG BEACH, Fla. - Robert J. Belske, 75, of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., died Friday, November 13. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Coger) Belske.
Mr. Belske was born July 31, 1934, in Ansonia, son of the late Walter and Helen (Kardas) Belske.
He was an accomplished golfer and sports fan. While he loved all sports, professional and collegiate, he was most enthusiastic about Ansonia High School football, following the team from afar in Florida and attending games whenever he visited Connecticut.
He leaves his daughter, Barbara Chopin and her husband, Stefan, of Weston; his brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Anne Belske of Seymour; three grandchildren, Philippa, Roxane and Lulu Chopin of Weston; three nieces, Louise, Kathy and Carol, and two nephews, Walter and Jim.
Friends and relatives may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 18, at Miller-Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank St., Route 67, Seymour.
A private burial will take place Thursday, November 19, in Mountain Meadows Cemetery, Seymour.
