Pomperaug Volleyball Downed in Class L

MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY - The Pomperaug volleyball team was ousted from the Class L state tournament last Thursday evening by East Lyme.

The Panthers earned the fifth seed in the tournament and a bye in the first round. The 12th-ranked Vikings from East Lyme play in a tough conference and finished fourth for the season.

PHS Rolls Over Weston
MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY - Game nine on the schedule was not much of a challenge for the Pomperaug football team; the Panthers rolled over Weston by a score of 48-0 last Friday night in Southbury.

The Panthers jumped all over the Trojans right from the start, getting three touchdown runs from Ben Crick in the first quarter that led to an immediate 20-0 advantage.

PHS Field Hockey Advances in CIAC
Class L Tournament

MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY - An overtime goal by Abbey Dwyer gave the Pomperaug field hockey team a 3-2 victory over Cheshire, and advanced the team into the semi-finals of the CIAC Class L tournament.

The Panthers won their first-round game by a score of 1-0 over Conard earlier in the week.

Pomperaug is the number-two seed in the tournament and with the two victories, the Panthers improved their record for the season to 15-2-1.

Soccer Registration Begins
BETHLEHEM-WOODBURY - The Woodbury Bethlehem Youth Soccer will finish its fall season the week of November 22.

Nearly 300 players were involved this season, supported by 65 volunteer coaches and managers.

Karate Classes Commence
BETHLEHEM - The Bethlehem Park and Recreation department will sponsor a 10-week winter karate program, beginning Monday, November 30, at Memorial Hall on Main Street.

Ages five and six will meet at 5 p.m., ages seven to 12 will meet at 6 p.m. and ages 13 to 70 will meet at 7 p.m.

Thinking of Sports
You may not know who Elizabeth Lambert is by name, but by now you must have seen her in action.

She is the young woman soccer player who tried to single-handedly rip apart the Brigham Young University team last week in a conference tournament game.

You might say that Lambert adheres to a principle of hard play. The University of New Mexico defensive specialist punched one opponent in the back, gave a forearm to the face of a second, tripped a few others and in her most famous act, yanked a BYU player to the ground by her ponytail.

NYC BIKE TOUR -

Woodbury Parks and Recreation sponsored a New York City Bike Tour on October 25. Participating bikers, including (from left) group leader Ben Miller, Sue Harrison, Kathy and Jeff Miller, Jill Rohan and Eileen Reed, took their bikes on the train and spent the day riding approximately 30 miles around the city.

Alyssa Naeher (Seymour/Christian Heritage) Big Ten Defensive Player of Year

Penn State claimed its 12th-straight Big Ten Women's Soccer Championship last Sunday with a 2-0 win over Michigan. Senior All-America goalie Alyssa Naeher (Seymour/Christian Heritage) didn't have to make a save in the game.

On Wednesday, Alyssa was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year for the second time, two years after her first award.

She has posted an outstanding season against the best competition in the NCAA (Penn State has third-hardest schedule in the country), putting up a .832 save percentage while allowing just 16 goals against 79 saves.

Cross Country Results Noted
MANCHESTER - Nonnewaug, Shepaug, Pomperaug and Oxford produced some outstanding times and finishes in the recent state division cross country championships and the CIAC State Open.

None was better than Nonnewaug's Jackie Nicholas. The outstanding junior won the Class M state championship and also beat all other female runners in the state in the State Open on November 7.

Spartans Advance Forward to Class S

WASHINGTON - For the first time in the history of the Shepaug girls' soccer program, the Spartans have advanced in the Class S state tournament to the semi-final round.

After receiving a bye in the first round, the seventh-seeded Shepaug team beat Somers 1-0 in the second round and then easily picked up another victory against 18th-ranked St. Paul by a 6-1 score.

Nonnewaug Looks Strong
as Class M Tourney Finalist

BETHLEHEM-WOODBURY - The Nonnewaug girls' soccer team has gotten itself back to the semi-final round of the Class M tournament once again and are looking to repeat as state finalist.

Through the first three rounds of the tournament, the Chiefs have looked very strong. They defeated Seymour 5-1 in the first round, then moved on to defeat 21st-ranked East Catholic in the second round 4-2.

Watertown Squirt A Team Wins
Over Southeastern Squirt A Team

WATERTOWN - The Watertown Youth Hockey Squirt A team recently skated to a 4-1 win over the Southeastern Connecticut Squirt A's at Taft.

Billy Scovill was fabulous in goal for the Redwings with 25 saves.

Pomperaug Girls' Soccer Bests New Milford 1-0
MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY - Pomperaug took 21 shots, to two by New Milford in their first-round CIAC girls' soccer game last week in Southbury, but it was only the last one that mattered.

Casey Hutchinson scored at 2:39 of the second overtime to give the Panthers a 1-0 win.

BETHLEHEM-WOODBURY - The Nonnewaug field hockey team won its first-round CIAC tournament game against 13th-ranked Guilford last Tuesday 1-0, but lost in the quarter-final round last Thursday to Hand High School of Madison 3-1.

The Chiefs were ranked fourth in Class M; they finish with a 14-3-1 record.

NHS Cheerleaders Support Troops
With Cash for Gold Fundraiser

WOODBURY - The Nonnewaug High School cheerleaders will host a Cash For Gold Party and Holiday Collections for the Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 21, at the Emergency Services Building, 25 Quassuk Rd.

Those attending may bring gold and silver jewelry and a certified buyer will appraise all items and write a check on the spot.

Abbey Suslavich, 15, and Kent Suslavich, 12, of Woodbury, have completed their certification course as an Instructor Level I, conducted by the U.S. Curling Association, a Wisconsin-based organization formed to promote the sport of curling throughout the U.S.

Ben Affenito scored the first two Redwing goals unassisted. Nicholas LaBella scored the third goal for Watertown, assisted by Shawn Danaher and Dillon Sanzari.

Moves to Quarter-Final Round of Class M

BETHLEHEM-WOODBURY - The Nonnewaug boys' soccer team has advanced to the quarter-final round of the Class M state tournament with back-to-back victories over 30th-seeded Woodland, 3-0, and 14th-seeded Rocky Hill, also 3-0.

That puts the third-ranked Chiefs in the quarter-final round against Granby in a game that was scheduled for early this week.
