Drayton-Rogers, McKane Victorious in Oxford Race

OXFORD - There was joy and revelry in the Democratic camp as supporters of First Selectman Mary Ann Drayton-Rogers and her running mate Selectman David McKane celebrated their election victory over Republicans David Haversat and David Yish last Tuesday.

The race for the first selectman seat was a close one. Mrs. Drayton-Rogers, who won a second term, garnered 1,895 votes to Mr. Haversat's 1,862 votes.

Woodbury Voters Choose Stomski, Perkinson Team
Republicans Barbara Perkinson and Jerry Stomski won the Tuesday, November 3, municipal election, as selectman and first selectman, respectively. The Board of Selectmen will consist of Mr. Stomski, Mrs. Perkinson and Democrat and incumbent Selectman George Hale. (Cura photo)

WOODBURY - Republican Gerald "Jerry" Stomski won the election for first selectman, Tuesday, November 3, over his challenger, current First Selectman and Democrat Paul Hinckley.

Mr. Stomski received 1,723 votes. Mr. Hinckley received 1,333 votes. The top three highest vote-getters in the first selectman and selectman race comprise the new Board of Selectmen.

Davis Voters' Top Choice in Southbury Election
SOUTHBURY - So much is owed by so many to so few. As in the fact that 28 percent (4,033 out of 14,409) of this town's registered voters turned out last Tuesday to elect the officers who will be responsible for the health, wealth and happiness of the town for the next two years.

H. William Davis, Jr., opposed for first selectman only by two write-in candidates, scored the highest number of votes, 2,819.

Wetlands Okays Mitigation Plan, Closes Hearing
ROXBURY - Before the Inland Wetland Commission, meeting Tuesday, October 27, took up the show cause hearing and cease and desist order concerning Janet O. McDonald's property at 6 Baker Road, Chairman Russell Dirienzo asked Dennis McDonald if he would like him to step down for this part of the meeting.

Mr. McDonald is a write-in candidate for first selectman in the November 3 municipal election. Mr. Dirienzo is running for reelection to the Board of Selectmen.

Tests Taken in Spring 2009 - CMT Results
Presented to Region 15 Board

SOUTHBURY - The Region 15 Board of Education was presented with evidence of academic achievement on October 26, when elementary and middle school principals, with Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lois Lanning, showcased the results of the spring 2009 Connecticut Mastery Tests.

The tests, held earlier this year, indicate continuing strong performances in mathematics shown by the children as they moved from grade 3, when 39 percent scored at advanced levels, to grade 8, when they hit 40.9 percent at the advanced levels.

Subject at Zoning Commission

WOODBURY - The Zoning Commission, at its Tuesday, October 28, meeting, accepted a draft of zoning regulation revisions and scheduled a public hearing for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, at the Annex Conference Room, 297 Main St. South.

The draft regulations revisions will be sent to the Planning Commission to review for consistency with the Plan of Conservation and Development.

Struggles to Put Her Life Back Together

OXFORD - Sunday, October 11, was a beautiful autumn day, so lovely that resident Jody Dardis could not resist boarding one of her two horses in her trailer and driving out to the Larkin Bridle Trail for a leisurely ride.

She called her friend, Lynne Meholik, and persuaded her to go along.

The two women were on the trail for about ten minutes when they heard the sound of motors approaching.

Oxford Veteran to Visit Memorials
With American Warrior Program
Stanley Beras, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran from Oxford, will be among the 99 World War II veterans from Connecticut who will visit the World War II memorials and other memorials in Washington, D.C., as guests of the American Warrior program on November 7. OXFORD - Although nearly 70 years have passed since Stanley Beras served in the U.S. Coast Guard, he recalls vividly the succession of events that comprised his three-year tour of duty.

Sitting in the comfort of his home on Jack's Hill Road, he recounted for Voices how he, a friend and a cousin decided in 1941 to join the Coast Guard and how he was the only one of the three who passed the physical.

"Me being the skinny one," he said of his lanky 134-pound frame at the time.
