Wilson A. Bell

Wilson Bell

SOUTHBURY - Wilson A. Bell, 81, of Southbury, died Saturday, November 14. He was the husband of Marion "May" Bell.

Mr. Bell was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, on July 19, 1928, and emigrated to the United States in 1968, settling in Southbury. He graduated from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He became an associate member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (U.K.) in 1964. After relocating with his family to the U.S., he was employed by Farrel Corporation of Ansonia and became a member of the American Institute of Mechanical Engineers in 1970. He retired as manager of operations for Farrel Technology Group at the age of 62 and subsequently was a consultant engineer for several years. He was active for many years in the St. Andrews Society of Connecticut. He was a long-time member and former secretary of the Southbury Volunteer Fire Department and led their Fife and Drum Corps for several years. A champion lawn bowler in Scotland, after his retirement, Mr. Bell co-founded the Thistle Lawn Bowling Club of Hartford. He was also an active member of the AARP, working as a volunteer speaker for the Driver Safety Program and become state coordinator for their 55 Alive program. In 2006 he received the AARP Special Recognition Award.

Besides his wife of 59 years, he is survived by two daughters, Ann and Marion, both of Southbury; a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Sharon Bell of Watertown; four grandchildren, Vanessa Lewis of Waterbury, John David Stevens of Winchester, Alison Shears of New Milford and Gordon Bell of Walpole, Mass.; four great-grandchildren, Hailey Stevens of Winchester, and Colby, Connor and Cara Shears of New Milford; his brother, James of Jedburgh, Scotland; and several nieces, nephews and other family members of Scotland, Australia and Canada.

Burial will be private and his family plans a memorial service at a future date. Arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.

Richard Bares

OAKVILLE - Richard W. Bares, 84, of Oakville, died in Waterbury, on Wednesday, November 11, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Genevieve Bares.

Mr. Bares was born September 18, 1925 in Waterbury, son of the late Bart and Bertha Bares and was a lifelong Oakville resident. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for many years as a toolmaker at Scovill Manufacturing Company. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy in both World War II and the Korean War. A disabled Veteran, he was a longtime member of VFW Post 7330 in Oakville and American Legion Post 195 in Watertown.

Besides his wife of 55 years of Oakville, he leaves a son, Gregory R. Bares; a grandson, Philip and daughter-in-law, Anna Bares.

Private funeral services and burial with military honors will be held at the convenience of his family. There are no calling hours.

The O'Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main Street, Oakville has been entrusted with arrangements.

William Carserino Sr.

WATERBURY - Mr. William E. Carserino Sr., 86, of 90-H Glenbrook Ave., Waterbury, died Saturday, November 14, at Saint Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his wife, Loretta (Coyle) Carserino, who died in 1994.

Mr. Carserino was born in Waterbury on April 25, 1923, son of the late John and Carmella (Vasalo) Carserino. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII and served proudly in the South Pacific on the USS Bennington CV20 from 1944 to 1946. He retired in 2006 after working as maintenance manager for Creative Management for 35 years. Prior to that, he was employed for Scovill Mfg. and the City of Waterbury Park Department. He was a member of the VFW Post 201, Waterbury and the VFW Post 1979, Wolcott.

He leaves four sons, Arthur King of Waterbury, William E. Carserino Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Summerville, S.C., John Carserino and his wife, Sue, of Wolcott, and Francis Bartolomeo and his wife, Mary, of Watertown; four daughters, Margaret King of Summerville, S.C., Bernadette (King) Follacchio, Marie Murno and Lori Smith and her husband, John, all of Waterbury; a brother, Edmund Carser and his wife, Bridie, of Waterbury; three sisters, Viola Zambrello of West Hartford, Mary Albino and Rosemund Rompre, both of Waterbury; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, November 18, from Chase Parkway Memorial/ The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, to a church to be announced. Burial with full military honors followed in New St. Joseph Cemetery in Waterbury.

Richard Colter

PLAINVILLE - Richard Colter, 51, of Plainville, died Monday, November 9, after a six-year battle with cancer. He was the husband of Patricia (Belanger) Colter.

Mr. Colter was born on April 5, 1958, in Southington, son of Dolores Colter of Plainville. He worked at Aetna Life and Causality for 15 years, most recently at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain Campus.

Besides his mother and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nicole Colter-Polchies and her husband, David, of Watertown; a son, Brian Colter of Bristol; a sister, Jacqueline Posadas and her husband, James, of Plainville; a brother, Randall Colter of Southington; five grandchildren, Caedon Polchies, Makenna Polchies, Mika Colter, Caylei Colter and Seth Colter; along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, November 13, at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad Street, Plainville. Burial followed at West Cemetery, Plainville.

Joseph Halloran

MIDDLEBURY - Joseph Robert Halloran, 74, of Middlebury, died Wednesday, November 11, at Waterbury Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Brenda (O'Connor) Halloran.

Mr. Halloran was born in Waterbury August 27, 1935 son of the late Eugene and Marjorie (McGrath) Halloran. He was a graduate of Crosby High School, Southern Connecticut State University, and received his masters degree and sixth year certificate from the University of Bridgeport. Mr. Halloran served in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1955. He served in Korea with Company A, 17th Infantry Division, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Mr. Halloran was a guidance counselor at Kennedy High School from 1970 until 1994. Before that, he taught science and coached basketball at Bunker Hill Grammar School. He later worked for the Waterbury Adult Education and was currently employed as a child advocate for the State of Connecticut. He was a member of St. John of the Cross Church and a member of Crestbook Golf Club.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Tracey Maton of Thomaston; one son, Brian J. Halloran of Waterbury; one brother, David E. Halloran and his wife, Grace, of Waterbury; one step-daughter, Coleen O'Connor of Litchfield; two step-sons, Michael O'Connor of Woodbury and Steve O'Connor; two grandsons, Gavin and Brendan Maton; five granddaughters, Michaela Motta, Elizabeth Motta, Madeline O'Connor, Olivia O'Connor and Jillian O'Connor; and two nieces, Dana Lawlor and Lauren Halloran.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 16, at St. John of the Cross Church, Middlebury. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Watertown, at the convenience of the family.

Thomas Sciortino

WATERBURY - Thomas Sciortino, 83, of Waterbury passed died Friday, November 13, at Waterbury Hospital in the presence of his family. He was the husband of Angelina (Rose) Sciortino.

Mr. Sciortino was born in New York, N.Y., on March 2, 1926, son of the late John and Francesca (Amico) Sciortino. He came to Waterbury as a child. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was the owner and operator of Monarch Painting Co. and he also was employed at Plume & Atwood Manufacturing in Thomaston both for many years until his retirement. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Loreto Church.

Besides his wife of sixty years, he leaves a son, Francis Sciortino of Waterbury; three daughters, Joann Brown and her husband, George, of Southbury, Lisa Bessette and her husband, David, of Watertown and Gina Farrington and her husband, Chris, of Waterbury; three brothers, Anthony Sciortino and his wife, Rita, of Southington, Joseph Sciortino and his wife, Rosanne, of Bantam, and John Sciortino and his wife, Grace, of Prospect; five grandchildren, Kristi D'Andrea and her husband, Doug, Ryan Bessette and his wife, Kristen, Michael Farrington, Thomas Farrington and Collin Bessette; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 18, from Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, to Our Lady of Loreto Church for a mass. Burial with full military honors followed at Calvary Cemetery.

James Wilkas

NAUGATUCK - James Albert Wilkas, 77 of 213 Melbourne Street, Naugatuck, died Sunday, November 15, at St. Mary's Hospital, after a long illness. He was the husband of Eleanor (Mangine) Wilkas.

Mr. Wilkas was born on June 5, 1932, in Naugatuck, a son of the late James August and Julia (Butkus) Wilkas. He was a retired engineer for Anamet-American Brass where he had worked for 37 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Military Police during the Korean War. He was a member of the Connecticut Nutmeg Flyers Club. He was a communicant of St. Francis Church.

Besides his wife of Naugatuck, he is survived by two daughters, Sandra Hill and her husband, Thomas A. Hill III, of Watertown and Marilee Wilkas and her fiancé, Christopher Ciarlo, of Waterbury; two sons, Thomas J. Wilkas of New Preston and James Alan Wilkas and his wife, Maureen, of Thomaston; one grandson, Daniel J. Wilkas, E-3 U.S. Air Force; one sister, Constance Allen of Lake Worth, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

A military funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 20, from the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck, to St. Francis Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck, for a mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
