WHS dominates 'Cats in cold, windy conditions
Indians' defense puts Wilby offense
in deep freeze 33-8
Watertown’s Tim Kinsella gains eight yards during the second quarter of the Indians’ key Brass Division football game against visiting Wilby High School on November 13. Kinsella would carry five times on the drive, which would result in a touchdown, giving WHS a 21-0 lead.

On a cold, rainy evening at the Mills Complex, the crowd of diehard Watertown High School football fans was waiting for something, anything to happen, so that they could applaud and warm their frozen hands.

Late in the first quarter of their final Brass Division game of the season against visiting Wilby High School on November 13, that moment arrived.

Early CIAC stunner for WHS boys
Bunnell ousts Indians, 1-0

WATERTOWN - As his team broke its final pre-game huddle, Watertown High School boys' soccer coach Dane Street passionately implored to his team, "Don't wait; go after it!"

The Indians did go for it, but weren't able to put a shot past Bunnell High School goalkeeper Sebastian Tamayo as the Bulldogs, seeded 14th, came into the Mills Athletic Complex and stunned the third-ranked Indians, 1-0 in a CIAC Class L tournament match on November 12.

WHS girls' soccer No.1 Suffield ends Indians'
season, 5-0

SUFFIELD - The 2009 season came an end for the Watertown High Schools girls' soccer team when they were defeated by top-ranked Suffield High School, 5-0 on November 11.

Ally Pasquariello and Alexa Keney scored two goals apiece, while Kelly McDonough added one for the Wildcats, who also maintained their undefeated record, improving to 16-0-1.

Joe Romano to be inducted into Fast Pitch HOF November 22
MILFORD - The Connecticut ASA Hall of Fame has announced the Joe Romano, a longtime Watertown resident and supporter of local sports, will be among its 2009 Fast Pitch Wing inductees.

Romano will be honored at the annual Hall of Fame dinner this coming Sunday, November 22 at Costa Azzurra Restaurant in Milford at 4 p.m.

Belichick made the right call

For one who has absolutely reveled on those rare occasions when something has gone awry for the New England Patriots over the last decade (prior to that it wasn't worth the effort, they were so irrelevant), I find myself in a very strange position right now.

I agree with the call Bill Belichick made in going for it on fourth and 2 at his own 28 with 2:08 left and a 34-28 lead on Sunday night in Indianapolis.

Indians mission on Thanksgiving:
Regaining 'The Helmet'

For the 44th consecutive season, Watertown High School will end its regular season football schedule against the Red Raiders of Torrington High School.

The annual rivalry game, also known at the "Battle for the Helmet," will be held on Thanksgiving morning, November 26, with kickoff scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

Rumble Run 5K Road Race

The Watertown Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the Harvest Ramble Run 5K Road Race to be held on Saturday, November 28, at Crestbrook Park, Northfield Road, Watertown.

Race day registration begins at the Pavilion at 8 a.m., with the Kids Fun Race beginning at 9:45 a.m. and the main race at 10 a.m.

Pop Warner Cheerleading Dinner
fundraiser November 24

A pasta dinner fundraiser will be conducted from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, at the Oakville VFW, 85 Davis Street.

Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Oakville Watertown Pop Warner Cheerleaders, allowing them to attend championship competitions in Florida.

The cost per person is $10 per person; children under five are free.

The Green Gators won the WAYS A Division championship match on November 14.

WHS boys & girls basketball notes Player signup, managers needed
All interested candidates for the Watertown High School freshman, junior varsity or varsity girls' basketball teams may sign up at the office of athletics' director June Legge through Thursday, November 19.

All candidates must complete the paperwork at the main office, including the permission slip, pay-to-play information, as well as the sports physical form.

Indians open with win over Bristol

On November 7, the Watertown Recreation Swim team began its 2009-2010 season with a 340-300 victory over Bristol at the Reinhold Pool.

Watertown swimmers established 235 personal best times.

WHS girls' swimming
PLAINVILLE - With berths in the CIAC Class S Girls' Swimming Finals at stake, Watertown High School competitors qualified in eight events at the qualifying meet on November 14, at Plainville High School.

The Finals were held at Wesleyan University in Middletown on November 17.

Watertown Youth Hockey
On November 15, the Watertown Youth Hockey Redwing Squirt A team traveled to Stamford to play the Tier II New Canaan Winter Club Squirt A's.

In a very exciting game, Watertown put forth a solid effort, but came away on the short end of a 6-3 final score. Emma Killeen scored two goals for the Redwings; Ben Affenito added a goal and one assist.

College notes Pilla wins MAAC
Defensive Player award

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist College men's soccer team was led defensively by red-shirt junior goalkeeper Joe Pilla of Watertown, who was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week.

Pilla made six saves to preserve a 3-0 shutout over Siena last week.

The shutout was Pilla's sixth of the season, the most of any Marist goalkeeper since 2004 when Mike Valenti had eight.

Pilla finished the season with a goals against average of 1.09 and made 70 saves.

COMPETING FOR TAP CHAMPIONSHIP -

Erica Mancini, 18, of Watertown, will be in Riesa, Germany, competing with the USA Tap Team at the IDO World Tap Dance Championships.

This championship will attract dancers from 35 nations, from five continents and will be held at the Erdgas Sports Arena in the heart of Saxonia, in Eastern Germany.
