Cast represented the Wolves quite well at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course on Saturday, placing 33rd out of 123 girls runners in Class 2-A and clocking a four-kilometer time of 16:14.
For Cast, though, it was the first time all fall that she hadn't won a race. The talented frosh went 10-for-10 during the regular season, including championship runs at both the Western Valley Conference and 2-A regional meets.
After Saturday's race, Cast seemed humbled by the big-time event, but also ready to get back out on the course and compete again.
"It was a really good season, but I think I had too much confidence coming into this," she said. "I was ranked 11th, I thought I'd be doing maybe top 10, but I was overconfident."
While some state meet newcomers fail to get out fast enough with the lead pack, Cast was pleased with her start and found herself near the top 10 early. But when the fast pace continued throughout, she found it hard to keep up.
If Cast is able to make it back to state next year, she plans to adjust her strategy just slightly.
"Maybe a slower start and keep maintaining in the middle of the race," she said.
Morgan Casey of Northeast/East Central won the 2-A girls' individual crown in dominating fashion, crossing the finish line in 14:53. Union, LaPorte City won the team title by a slim 57 to 60 margin over Pekin.
