PERRY -- The phrase "next man in" - or in their case, "next girl in" - was certainly demonstrated by the Harlan Community volleyball team on Tuesday night. Competing without six varsity players who were down with illness, the Cyclones won two out of three matches and placed third out of six teams at the Perry Volleyball Tournament. HCHS went 1-1 in its three-team pool, defeating Ballard rather handily, 21-9, 21-12, and losing to Fort Dodge, 21-23, 11-21. The Cyclones lost game one of their third-place match versus Roland-Story, 22-25, but came back to take the next two sets, 25-19, 15-12. HCHS head coach Julie DuVal was pleased with the final outcome of the Cyclones' first Perry Tourney appearance, especially considering the circumstances. "Everybody did a good job as we were playing short-handed," she said. "It was a decent tournament to go to on a week night. I just really wish we could've got game one versus Fort Dodge and put some pressure on them." The tournament featured a breakout performance by sophomore Sarah Konz, who saw her most significant playing time of the season. With junior middle blocker Sadie Christensen sidelined, Jessica Ring moved from the outside to fill her spot and Konz took over Ring's starting position and made the most of her opportunity. In seven total games, Konz stepped up with 18 kills (.225 efficiency), served 13-for-13 and was third on the team with 14 digs. Ring was also solid, serving 21-for-22 with four aces, leading the team with four blocks and posting a kill efficiency of .294 on 13 kills. "They did a really good job. It worked out alright," DuVal said of the lineup adjustments. The Cyclone head coach was most impressed with the back row play of Konz, along with Jacie White, who were both forced into more "all-around" duty. "She had to be a primary passer and she did a really nice job of passing and digging," DuVal said of Konz. "I already knew she was a good attacker, but she really showed she can play the floor. "Ring really closed in on her blocks and used good footwork." DuVal was also pleased with the play of junior outsider hitter White and senior middle Amanda Petersen. White led the team with 25 kills (.203 efficiency) and had 15 digs and three blocks. Petersen added 11 kills and was one of four Cyclones with four ace serves. Senior libero Mary Kaufmann averaged nearly five digs per game, finishing with 34, and along with Danielle Stewart had an outstanding night receiving serves. As a team, HCHS finished with a solid kill efficiency of 19 percent as the top three kill-getters all hit between .200 and .300. Perry was the tournament champion for the night, outlasting Fort Dodge in the first-place final. The Cyclones (19-13 overall) will now have a week off from competition before hosting Lewis Central Tuesday night in a battle for third place in the Hawkeye 10. Both teams have two losses in conference play. Perry Volleyball Tournament (October 13) TOP 4 PLACE-WINNERS 1st place: Perry; 2nd: Fort Dodge; 3rd: Harlan Community; 4th: Roland-Story.
