RED OAK -- Competing on short rest, the Harlan Community cross country squads made another strong showing at the Red Oak Invitational late Monday. Just two days after running in Council Bluffs, the Cyclone girls claimed their fourth team title in five meets by a margin of 43 to 68 over Atlantic and Griswold. HCHS placed four girls in the top 10 and all seven varsity runners finished 27th or better. The Cyclone boys placed second as a team behind St. Albert, which took the team title by a 39 to 77 score. Keyed by Nathan Brace's fifth top-2 finish in as many meets, HCHS scored five runners in the top 25. "It would have been easy to mentally let down after racing Saturday and use fatigue as an excuse, but that's not the way this group works," said HCHS head coach Doug Renkly. "Toughness made up for fatigue Monday." HCHS senior Nathan Brace placed second in the boys' five-kilometer race, trailing Dennis Lengishon of Atlantic by 12 seconds. Lengishon, a foreign exchange student from Tanzania (Africa), had twice finished behind Brace earlier this season, but ran a strong time of 17:13 Monday on a hilly course at the Red Oak Country Club. "There is definitely more company up front in the boys race for Hawkeye 10 champion," Renkly noted. "Lengishon is running very well and getting better each time out." The Cyclones' remaining boys runners all placed between 14th and 39th. Matt Brace was 14th, followed by Josh Travis (16th), Alex Voge (20th) and Josh Pauley (25th) among places that counted toward the team total. Brian Wingert placed 30th and Collin Schmidt was 39th in a field of 71 runners. "I was extremely happy with the determination that the entire boys squad ran with," Renkly said. "This is a tough course and you have to be tough to run it well. I didn't know exactly what to expect after just one day off, but they proved that they want to race." Placing four runners in the top 10 made the HCHS girls almost impossible to beat. Jenny Hosack and Jessie Byrnes continued their alternating rotation as the Cyclones' front runner by placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in 17:16 and 17:25. Cari Freml (17:48) placed seventh, followed by Ellen Klitgaard (10th), Jess Feldman (17th), Shelbie Jacobsen (21st) and Brianna Croghan (27th). Atlantic claimed the individual champ in Ali Krogman (16:28) and Griswold placed four runners in the top 16, but both teams finished 25 points behind HCHS. "The varsity girls had their hands full with Griswold and Atlantic," Renkly added. "We knew it would come down to early team positioning and creating separation because a lot can happen during a challenging hilly course like Red Oak." The Cyclones also celebrated first-place team finishes by both junior varsity squads Monday as the JV girls scored a 24 and the boys tallied a 41. The Cyclones will travel to Carroll Saturday morning (9 a.m.) for one of their toughest meets of the year - the Kuemper Invite.
