Heelan at Harlan Friday night
The Cyclones can now turn their attention to defending Class 3-A state champion Sioux City Bishop Heelan. The Crusaders, who brushed aside Class A opponent Lawton-Bronson on Thursday night, 42-15, will travel to Harlan Friday night for a 7:30 game at Merrill Field. Heelan is responsible for the Cyclones' last three defeats on the gridiron, including playoff quarterfinal losses the last two years. The Crusaders lost a lot of talent to graduation, including career 6,800-yard rusher Brandon Wegher, but three-year starter Zach McCabe returns at quarterback with a solid supporting cast.

"They're a really good football team; extremely fast and their quarterback is very, very salty," said HCHS coach Curt Bladt. "They've got a good running back - another Wegher (Cole) - and (receiver) Preston Ives is a tough kid."

A Holy Beginning
The Cyclones' four senior captains for Friday night were Matt Hoch, Mark Langenfeld, Luke Lansman and Jon Kaufman. Together, they set a biblical theme as they walked to midfield for the pre-game coin toss representing the first four books of the New Testament - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Bergstrom wins number 200
Creston/O-M head coach Dick Bergstrom notched his 200th career win Friday night as the Panthers nipped Chariton, 28-27. Bergstrom, now 200-151 overall, had to wait awhile for No. 200 after his team won last year's opener as well, then lost their next eight games.

Overall, Class 3-A District 8 fared well in Week 1, winning six out of eight games after starting 3-5 a year ago.
