DES MOINES -- Three Harlan Community baseball players and another from Elk Horn-Kimballton have been named to the 2009 Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Baseball teams, released Tuesday.
Sports writers from across the state selected first, second and third teams, as well as senior captains for all four classes (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A).
HCHS senior Tyler Lefeber was the area's only first-team selection, chosen as the first-team, first baseman in Class 3-A. Cyclone teammates Bobby Seivert (pitcher) and Michael Kaufmann (infield) were both named third-teamers in 3-A, while EH-K junior Carson Smith was voted to the Class 1-A second team as a pitcher.
This year's four senior captain selections were as follows: Sioux City North's Dean McArdle in 4-A, Matt Dermody of Norwalk (3-A), Joey Flattery of Fort Dodge St. Edmond (2-A) and Jordan Adams of Mason City Newman (1-A). All four led their respective teams to state titles last week at Principal Park.

The following is a brief capsule on each area All-Stater.
Tyler Lefeber, HCHS, sr. (1st team first baseman - Class 3-A)
Lefeber capped his stellar Cyclone career as a standout pitcher, first baseman and designated hitter in 2009, batting .389 and going 5-0 on the mound with a 3.27 earned run average. At the plate, Lefeber led a balanced HCHS lineup with seven home runs and a .674 slugging percentage, adding 44 RBI, 25 runs scored and 23 walks. His on-base percentage ranked second on the team at .536. As a pitcher, Lefeber walked just 14 batters in 40.67 innings while striking out 35. He will continue his baseball career at Buena Vista University.
Carson Smith, EH-K, jr. (2nd team picher - Class 1-A)
Smith posted some of the most dominating all-around numbers in southwest Iowa this summer, averaging nearly two strikeouts per inning as a pitcher and turning 46 percent of his hits into extra bases. Also a shortstop for the Danes, Smith batted .507 with nine home runs, 30 RBI, 30 runs scored, six doubles and a triple. His on-base percentage reached .609 and his slugging soared to 1.014. On the mound, Smith fired two no-hitters and went 7-2 with a 1.34 ERA and two saves, allowing just 26 hits in 67.67 innings. Opponents batted just .114 against Smith, drawing 38 walks but striking out 128 times.
Bobby Seivert, HCHS, sr. (3rd team pitcher - Class 3-A)
Seivert, who will pitch at Iowa Lakes Community College next spring, finished his Cyclone career going 5-2 as a senior with one save and a 2.19 ERA. Facing the likes of Sioux City North, St. Albert, Cherokee, Lewis Central and Denison-Schleswig, Seivert struck out 42 batters in 38.33 innings while issuing only 10 walks. He also enjoyed his best season at the plate, leading the team with a .582 on-base percentage and batting .387 with six extra-base hits, 22 RBI and 16 runs.
Michael Kaufmann, HCHS, jr. (3rd team infielder - Class 3-A)
As steady in the 2-hole of the batting order as he was at shortstop, Kaufmann drew a team-high 29 walks and batted .371 with 42 runs scored (tied for the team lead), 26 RBI and 21 stolen bases. He struck out just six times in 97 at-bats and had an on-base percentage of .534. Kaufmann went 2-0 with a save in limited duty on the mound, but was most valuable at shortstop with his great range and quick release.
