North (36-7) won the first-ever state baseball title for any public school from Sioux City behind Stanford recruit Dean McArdle's one-hit, 12-strikeout complete game against number-seven seed Iowa City West. The Stars won the championship game, 4-0.
Norwalk (28-13) also got a big game from its high-profile ace in the finals as Iowa recruit and Pittsburgh Pirates' draft pick Matt Dermody fired a four-hit shutout with 13 K's against seventh-seeded Storm Lake. The Warriors scored seven runs in the first inning and beat the Tornadoes, 7-0.
In Class 2-A, Fort Dodge St. Edmond (35-3) won its first state baseball title by holding off a late rally from second-seeded Beckman, Dyersville in the championship game, 11-8. Both teams had to scratch and claw to make the finals against a balanced 2-A field.
Newman (37-1) capped a dominating run to the Class 1-A title by defeating third-seeded Lenox and its talented 10-man roster, 11-1, in just five innings. Newman won all of its district, substate and state tournament games by the 10-run rule except for one - a 4-0 win over Alta in the 1-A state semifinals.
